A certain ruler asked him,“ Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

A certain ruler asked Jesus a question.“ Good teacher,” he said,“ what must I do to receive eternal life?”

And a ruler asked him,“ Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

Once a religious leader asked Jesus this question:“ Good Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?”

A ruler asked him,“ Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

A ruler questioned Him, saying,“ Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

Now a certain ruler asked Him, saying,“ Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

A ruler asked Him,“ Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

Now a certain ruler asked him,“ Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him.“ Good teacher,” he asked,“ what must I do to inherit eternal life?”“ Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered.“ No one is good— except God alone.You know the commandments:‘ You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, you shall not defraud, honor your father and mother.’”“ Teacher,” he declared,“ all these I have kept since I was a boy.”Jesus looked at him and loved him.“ One thing you lack,” he said.“ Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.Jesus looked around and said to his disciples,“ How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!”The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again,“ Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other,“ Who then can be saved?”Jesus looked at them and said,“ With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.”Then Peter spoke up,“ We have left everything to follow you!”“ Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied,“ no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospelwill fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age: homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields— along with persecutions— and in the age to come eternal life.But many who are first will be last, and the last first.” (niv)

Just then a man came up to Jesus and asked,“ Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?”“ Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied.“ There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.”“ Which ones?” he inquired. Jesus replied,“‘ You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony,honor your father and mother,’ and‘ love your neighbor as yourself.’”“ All these I have kept,” the young man said.“ What do I still lack?”Jesus answered,“ If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.Then Jesus said to his disciples,“ Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven.Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked,“ Who then can be saved?”Jesus looked at them and said,“ With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”Peter answered him,“ We have left everything to follow you! What then will there be for us?”Jesus said to them,“ Truly I tell you, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first. (niv)

He then brought them out and asked,“ Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” (niv)

“ Why do you call me,‘ Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? (niv)

On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus.“ Teacher,” he asked,“ what must I do to inherit eternal life?”“ What is written in the Law?” he replied.“ How do you read it?”He answered,“‘ Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and,‘ Love your neighbor as yourself.’”“ You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied.“ Do this and you will live.” (niv)

“ A son honors his father, and a slave his master. If I am a father, where is the honor due me? If I am a master, where is the respect due me?” says the Lord Almighty.“ It is you priests who show contempt for my name.“ But you ask,‘ How have we shown contempt for your name?’ (niv)

“ You call me‘ Teacher’ and‘ Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am.Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. (niv)

My people come to you, as they usually do, and sit before you to hear your words, but they do not put them into practice. Their mouths speak of love, but their hearts are greedy for unjust gain. (niv)

When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles,“ Brothers, what shall we do?” (niv)
