“ But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said,‘ God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’

“ But the tax collector stood farther away than the Pharisee. He would not even look up to heaven. He brought his hand to his heart and prayed. He said,‘ God, have mercy on me. I am a sinner.’

“ But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed. Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow, saying,‘ O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.’

“ But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even raise his eyes to heaven but kept striking his chest and saying,‘ God, have mercy on me, a sinner!’

But the tax collector, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to raise his eyes toward heaven, but was beating his chest, saying,‘ God, be merciful to me, the sinner!’

But the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote his breast, saying, God, be thou merciful to me a sinner.

saying:“ O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift my face to you, my God, for our iniquities have risen higher than our heads, and our guilt has mounted up to the heavens.

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.

And all the crowds that had assembled for this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, returned home beating their breasts.

Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles,“ Brothers, what shall we do?”

but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

And I said:“ Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!”

You meet him who joyfully works righteousness, those who remember you in your ways. Behold, you were angry, and we sinned; in our sins we have been a long time, and shall we be saved?We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.

Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

As for me, I said,“ O Lord, be gracious to me; heal me, for I have sinned against you!”

But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.Turn to me and be gracious to me; give your strength to your servant, and save the son of your maidservant.

And Jesus went with them. When he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to him,“ Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof.Therefore I did not presume to come to you. But say the word, and let my servant be healed.

therefore I despise myself, and repent in dust and ashes.”

For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more.”

But the other rebuked him, saying,“ Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation?And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.”And he said,“ Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”And he said to him,“ Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”

But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying,“ Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.”

that you may remember and be confounded, and never open your mouth again because of your shame, when I atone for you for all that you have done, declares the Lord God.”

“ Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions.Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me.

For see what earnestness this godly grief has produced in you, but also what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, what zeal, what punishment! At every point you have proved yourselves innocent in the matter.

For evils have encompassed me beyond number; my iniquities have overtaken me, and I cannot see; they are more than the hairs of my head; my heart fails me.

And he did not humble himself before the Lord, as Manasseh his father had humbled himself, but this Amon incurred guilt more and more.

[ Waw] Let your steadfast love come to me, O Lord, your salvation according to your promise;

O my God, incline your ear and hear. Open your eyes and see our desolations, and the city that is called by your name. For we do not present our pleas before you because of our righteousness, but because of your great mercy.O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive. O Lord, pay attention and act. Delay not, for your own sake, O my God, because your city and your people are called by your name.”

we have sinned and done wrong and acted wickedly and rebelled, turning aside from your commandments and rules.

Go and learn what this means:‘ I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Both we and our fathers have sinned; we have committed iniquity; we have done wickedness.

O Israel, hope in the Lord! For with the Lord there is steadfast love, and with him is plentiful redemption.

If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?But with you there is forgiveness, that you may be feared.

To you, O Lord, belongs righteousness, but to us open shame, as at this day, to the men of Judah, to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to all Israel, those who are near and those who are far away, in all the lands to which you have driven them, because of the treachery that they have committed against you.To us, O Lord, belongs open shame, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against you.To the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness, for we have rebelled against himand have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God by walking in his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets.All Israel has transgressed your law and turned aside, refusing to obey your voice. And the curse and oath that are written in the Law of Moses the servant of God have been poured out upon us, because we have sinned against him.

And as he entered a village, he was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance

Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions; according to your steadfast love remember me, for the sake of your goodness, O Lord!

And when he was in distress, he entreated the favor of the Lord his God and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers.He prayed to him, and God was moved by his entreaty and heard his plea and brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the Lord was God.

For your name’s sake, O Lord, pardon my guilt, for it is great.
