The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed:‘ God, I thank you that I am not like other people— robbers, evildoers, adulterers— or even like this tax collector.

The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed.‘ God, I thank you that I am not like other people,’ he said.‘ I am not like robbers or those who do other evil things. I am not like those who commit adultery. I am not even like this tax collector.

The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus:‘ God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.

But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers.For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.For he who said,“ You shall not commit adultery,” also said,“ You shall not murder.” If you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker.Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom,

You say,‘ I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.

you say,‘ I am innocent; he is not angry with me.’ But I will pass judgment on you because you say,‘ I have not sinned.’

who say,‘ Keep away; don’t come near me, for I am too sacred for you!’ Such people are smoke in my nostrils, a fire that keeps burning all day.

For day after day they seek me out; they seem eager to know my ways, as if they were a nation that does what is right and has not forsaken the commands of its God. They ask me for just decisions and seem eager for God to come near them.

Praise the Lord, all you servants of the Lord who minister by night in the house of the Lord.

For who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?Already you have all you want! Already you have become rich! You have begun to reign— and that without us! How I wish that you really had begun to reign so that we also might reign with you!

When you spread out your hands in prayer, I hide my eyes from you; even when you offer many prayers, I am not listening. Your hands are full of blood!

you who minister in the house of the Lord, in the courts of the house of our God.

My people come to you, as they usually do, and sit before you to hear your words, but they do not put them into practice. Their mouths speak of love, but their hearts are greedy for unjust gain.

I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me trustworthy, appointing me to his service.Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief.The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners— of whom I am the worst.But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life.

Where then are the gods you made for yourselves? Let them come if they can save you when you are in trouble! For you, Judah, have as many gods as you have towns.

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them:“ You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.And do not think you can say to yourselves,‘ We have Abraham as our father.’ I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.”

For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, as it is written:“ Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.”

For I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them— yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.

Her leaders judge for a bribe, her priests teach for a price, and her prophets tell fortunes for money. Yet they look for the Lord’s support and say,“ Is not the Lord among us? No disaster will come upon us.”

“ Which ones?” he inquired. Jesus replied,“‘ You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony,honor your father and mother,’ and‘ love your neighbor as yourself.’”“ All these I have kept,” the young man said.“ What do I still lack?”

as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for righteousness based on the law, faultless.
