He said to them,“ You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of others, but God knows your hearts. What people value highly is detestable in God’s sight.

Jesus said to them,“ You try to make yourselves look good in the eyes of other people. But God knows your hearts. What people think is worth a lot is hated by God.

Then he said to them,“ You like to appear righteous in public, but God knows your hearts. What this world honors is detestable in the sight of God.

And he told them,“ You are the ones who justify yourselves in the sight of others, but God knows your hearts. For what is highly admired by people is revolting in God’s sight.

And He said to them,“ You are the ones who justify yourselves in the sight of people, but God knows your hearts; because that which is highly esteemed among people is detestable in the sight of God.

And He said to them,“ You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God.

And he said unto them, Ye are they that justify yourselves in the sight of men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God.

And He told them:“ You are the ones who justify yourselves in the sight of others, but God knows your hearts. For what is highly admired by people is revolting in God’s sight.

And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.

But Jesus said to them,“ You are the ones who justify yourselves in men’s eyes, but God knows your hearts. For what is highly prized among men is utterly detestable in God’s sight.

He said to them,“ You are those who justify yourselves in the sight of men, but God knows your hearts. For that which is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God.

But the Lord said to Samuel,“ Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”

Everyone who is arrogant in heart is an abomination to the Lord; be assured, he will not go unpunished.

“ I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.”

but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.

Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for“ God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

And God, who knows the heart, bore witness to them, by giving them the Holy Spirit just as he did to us,

Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the heart.

Therefore do not pronounce judgment before the time, before the Lord comes, who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Then each one will receive his commendation from God.

I know, my God, that you test the heart and have pleasure in uprightness. In the uprightness of my heart I have freely offered all these things, and now I have seen your people, who are present here, offering freely and joyously to you.

And the Lord said to him,“ Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness.

and I will strike her children dead. And all the churches will know that I am he who searches mind and heart, and I will give to each of you according to your works.

But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus,“ And who is my neighbor?”

then hear from heaven your dwelling place and forgive and render to each whose heart you know, according to all his ways, for you, you only, know the hearts of the children of mankind,

They do all their deeds to be seen by others. For they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long,

“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean.“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness.

Oh, let the evil of the wicked come to an end, and may you establish the righteous— you who test the minds and hearts, O righteous God!

The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus:‘ God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.

( Now this man acquired a field with the reward of his wickedness, and falling headlong he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out.

and needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man.

“ Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.

For the wicked boasts of the desires of his soul, and the one greedy for gain curses and renounces the Lord.

For though, while he lives, he counts himself blessed— and though you get praise when you do well for yourself—

This is the path of those who have foolish confidence; yet after them people approve of their boasts. Selah

For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.

O Lord, you have searched me and known me!You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar.

Hear the word of the Lord, you rulers of Sodom! Give ear to the teaching of our God, you people of Gomorrah!“ What to me is the multitude of your sacrifices? says the Lord; I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams and the fat of well-fed beasts; I do not delight in the blood of bulls, or of lambs, or of goats.“ When you come to appear before me, who has required of you this trampling of my courts?Bring no more vain offerings; incense is an abomination to me. New moon and Sabbath and the calling of convocations— I cannot endure iniquity and solemn assembly.Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hates; they have become a burden to me; I am weary of bearing them.

And he said,“ All these I have kept from my youth.”

“ And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.

who devour widows’ houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”

“ And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.

Many a man proclaims his own steadfast love, but a faithful man who can find?

And now we call the arrogant blessed. Evildoers not only prosper but they put God to the test and they escape.’”

“ I hate, I despise your feasts, and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies.Even though you offer me your burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them; and the peace offerings of your fattened animals, I will not look upon them.

So they watched him and sent spies, who pretended to be sincere, that they might catch him in something he said, so as to deliver him up to the authority and jurisdiction of the governor.

Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar?You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works;and the Scripture was fulfilled that says,“ Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”— and he was called a friend of God.You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.And in the same way was not also Rahab the prostitute justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way?

He said to him the third time,“ Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time,“ Do you love me?” and he said to him,“ Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him,“ Feed my sheep.
