耶稣向那些自以为义而藐视别人的人讲了这比喻：“有两个人上圣殿去祷告，一个是法利赛人，一个是税吏。法利赛人独自站着，自言自语地祷告说：‘神啊，我感谢你，我不像别人勒索、不义、奸淫，也不像这个税吏。

有一类人，自以为纯洁，却没有洗净自己的污秽。

就热心说，我是迫害教会的；就律法上的义说，我是无可指责的。只是我先前以为对我是有益的，我现在因基督的缘故而当作是有损的。

以前没有律法的时候，我是活的；但是诫命来到，罪活起来，

耶稣对他们说：“你们是在人面前自称为义的，你们的心，神却知道；因为人以为尊贵的，是神看为可憎恶的。

他对父亲说：‘你看，我服侍你这么多年，从来没有违背过你的命令，而你从来没有给我一只小山羊，叫我和朋友们一同快乐。
