But he answered his father,‘ Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends.

But he answered his father,‘ Look! All these years I’ve worked like a slave for you. I have always obeyed your orders. You never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends.

but he answered his father,‘ Look, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command, yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might celebrate with my friends.

but he replied,‘ All these years I’ve slaved for you and never once refused to do a single thing you told me to. And in all that time you never gave me even one young goat for a feast with my friends.

But he replied to his father,‘ Look, I have been slaving many years for you, and I have never disobeyed your orders, yet you never gave me a goat so that I could celebrate with my friends.

But he answered and said to his father,‘ Look! For so many years I have been serving you and I have never neglected a command of yours; and yet you never gave me a young goat, so that I might celebrate with my friends;

So he answered and said to his father,‘ Lo, these many years I have been serving you; I never transgressed your commandment at any time; and yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might make merry with my friends.

The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed:‘ God, I thank you that I am not like other people— robbers, evildoers, adulterers— or even like this tax collector.I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’ (niv)

For day after day they seek me out; they seem eager to know my ways, as if they were a nation that does what is right and has not forsaken the commands of its God. They ask me for just decisions and seem eager for God to come near them.‘ Why have we fasted,’ they say,‘ and you have not seen it? Since they did not know the righteousness of God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness. (niv)

So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say,‘ We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.’” (niv)

You know the commandments:‘ You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.’”“ All these I have kept since I was a boy,” he said. (niv)

Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it. (niv)

Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. Because of what law? The law that requires works? No, because of the law that requires faith. (niv)

‘ These who were hired last worked only one hour,’ they said,‘ and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.’ (niv)

When Samuel reached him, Saul said,“ The Lord bless you! I have carried out the Lord’s instructions.”But Samuel said,“ What then is this bleating of sheep in my ears? What is this lowing of cattle that I hear?” (niv)

who say,‘ Keep away; don’t come near me, for I am too sacred for you!’ Such people are smoke in my nostrils, a fire that keeps burning all day. (niv)

“ You have said,‘ It is futile to serve God. What do we gain by carrying out his requirements and going about like mourners before the Lord Almighty? (niv)

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us. (niv)

You say,‘ I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. (niv)

I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent. (niv)

“ But you profane it by saying,‘ The Lord’s table is defiled,’ and,‘ Its food is contemptible.’And you say,‘ What a burden!’ and you sniff at it contemptuously,” says the Lord Almighty.“ When you bring injured, lame or diseased animals and offer them as sacrifices, should I accept them from your hands?” says the Lord. (niv)

To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable: (niv)

I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you did not put in and reap what you did not sow.’ (niv)

by asking the priests of the house of the Lord Almighty and the prophets,“ Should I mourn and fast in the fifth month, as I have done for so many years?” (niv)

Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin. (niv)
