This made the Pharisees and teachers of religious law complain that he was associating with such sinful people— even eating with them!

The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say,‘ Behold, a gluttonous man and a heavy drinker, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’

saying,“ You went to uncircumcised men and ate with them.”

The Pharisees and their scribes began grumbling to His disciples, saying,“ Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and sinners?”

For prior to the coming of some men from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles; but when they came, he began to withdraw and separate himself, fearing those from the circumcision.

I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people;I did not at all mean with the sexually immoral people of this world, or with the greedy and swindlers, or with idolaters, for then you would have to leave the world.But actually, I wrote to you not to associate with any so called brother if he is a sexually immoral person, or a greedy person, or an idolater, or is verbally abusive, or habitually drunk, or a swindler— not even to eat with such a person.

For so many years I have been serving you and I have never neglected a command of yours; and yet you never gave me a young goat, so that I might celebrate with my friends;but when this son of yours came, who has devoured your wealth with prostitutes, you slaughtered the fattened calf for him.’
