The one who loves pleasure will become poor; whoever loves wine and oil will not get rich.

A discerning son keeps the law, but a companion of gluttons humiliates his father.

“ There was a rich man who would dress in purple and fine linen, feasting lavishly every day.

Rejoice, young person, while you are young, and let your heart be glad in the days of your youth. Let us walk with decency, as in the daytime: not in carousing and drunkenness; not in sexual impurity and promiscuity; not in quarreling and jealousy.But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh to gratify its desires.

But look: joy and gladness, butchering of cattle, slaughtering of sheep and goats, eating of meat, and drinking of wine—“ Let’s eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!”

Get out of the way! Leave the pathway. Rid us of the Holy One of Israel.”

For my people have committed a double evil: They have abandoned me, the fountain of living water, and dug cisterns for themselves— cracked cisterns that cannot hold water.

He made Asherah poles, and he bowed in worship to all the stars in the sky and served them.He built altars in the LORD’s temple, where the LORD had said,“ Jerusalem is where my name will remain forever.”He built altars to all the stars in the sky in both courtyards of the LORD’s temple.He passed his sons through the fire in Ben Hinnom Valley. He practiced witchcraft, divination, and sorcery, and consulted mediums and spiritists. He did a huge amount of evil in the LORD’s sight, angering him.Manasseh set up a carved image of the idol, which he had made, in God’s temple that God had spoken about to David and his son Solomon:“ I will establish my name forever in this temple and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel.I will never again remove the feet of the Israelites from the land where I stationed your ancestors, if only they will be careful to do all I have commanded them through Moses— all the law, statutes, and judgments.”So Manasseh caused Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to stray so that they did worse evil than the nations the LORD had destroyed before the Israelites.The LORD spoke to Manasseh and his people, but they didn’t listen.

In all his scheming, the wicked person arrogantly thinks,“ There’s no accountability, since there’s no God.”His ways are always secure; your lofty judgments have no effect on him; he scoffs at all his adversaries.He says to himself,“ I will never be moved— from generation to generation I will be without calamity.”

They spend their days in prosperity and go down to Sheol in peace.Yet they say to God,“ Leave us alone! We don’t want to know your ways.Who is the Almighty, that we should serve him, and what will we gain by pleading with him?”

They were the ones who said to God,“ Leave us alone!” and“ What can the Almighty do to us?”But it was he who filled their houses with good things. The counsel of the wicked is far from me!

Evil generation, pay attention to the word of the LORD! Have I been a wilderness to Israel or a land of dense darkness? Why do my people claim,“ We will go where we want; we will no longer come to you”?

Precious treasure and oil are in the dwelling of a wise person, but a fool consumes them.

Keep your way far from her. Don’t go near the door of her house.Otherwise, you will give up your vitality to others and your years to someone cruel;strangers will drain your resources, and your hard-earned pay will end up in a foreigner’s house.At the end of your life, you will lament when your physical body has been consumed,and you will say,“ How I hated discipline, and how my heart despised correction.I didn’t obey my teachers or listen closely to my instructors.I am on the verge of complete ruin before the entire community.”

Oh sinful nation, people weighed down with iniquity, brood of evildoers, depraved children! They have abandoned the LORD; they have despised the Holy One of Israel; they have turned their backs on him.

Anyone wandering from his home is like a bird wandering from its nest.

He came and proclaimed the good news of peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near.

But now in Christ Jesus, you who were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ.

They will be paid back with harm for the harm they have done. They consider it a pleasure to carouse in broad daylight. They are spots and blemishes, delighting in their deceptions while they feast with you.
