Then Joshua warned the people,“ You are not able to serve the Lord, for he is a holy and jealous God. He will not forgive your rebellion and your sins.If you abandon the Lord and serve other gods, he will turn against you and destroy you, even though he has been so good to you.”But the people answered Joshua,“ No, we will serve the Lord!”“ You are a witness to your own decision,” Joshua said.“ You have chosen to serve the Lord.”“ Yes,” they replied,“ we are witnesses to what we have said.”“ All right then,” Joshua said,“ destroy the idols among you, and turn your hearts to the Lord, the God of Israel.”The people said to Joshua,“ We will serve the Lord our God. We will obey him alone.”

And all nations will hate you because you are my followers. But everyone who endures to the end will be saved.

So you cannot become my disciple without giving up everything you own.

But Jesus replied,“ Foxes have dens to live in, and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place even to lay his head.”

But he said,“ Why all this weeping? You are breaking my heart! I am ready not only to be jailed at Jerusalem but even to die for the sake of the Lord Jesus.”

Even while we were with you, we warned you that troubles would soon come— and they did, as you well know.That is why, when I could bear it no longer, I sent Timothy to find out whether your faith was still strong. I was afraid that the tempter had gotten the best of you and that our work had been useless.

But Jesus answered by saying to them,“ You don’t know what you are asking! Are you able to drink from the bitter cup of suffering I am about to drink?”“ Oh yes,” they replied,“ we are able!”Jesus told them,“ You will indeed drink from my bitter cup. But I have no right to say who will sit on my right or my left. My Father has prepared those places for the ones he has chosen.”

And it is only right that I should keep on reminding you as long as I live.For our Lord Jesus Christ has shown me that I must soon leave this earthly life,

Then they said,“ Come, let’s build a great city for ourselves with a tower that reaches into the sky. This will make us famous and keep us from being scattered all over the world.”But the Lord came down to look at the city and the tower the people were building.“ Look!” he said.“ The people are united, and they all speak the same language. After this, nothing they set out to do will be impossible for them!Come, let’s go down and confuse the people with different languages. Then they won’t be able to understand each other.”In that way, the Lord scattered them all over the world, and they stopped building the city.That is why the city was called Babel, because that is where the Lord confused the people with different languages. In this way he scattered them all over the world.
