「愛父母過於愛我的，不配作我的門徒；愛兒女過於愛我的，不配作我的門徒；

愛惜自己生命的，就失喪生命；在這世上恨惡自己生命的，就要保守生命到永生。

不但如此，我也將萬事當作有損的，因我以認識我主基督耶穌為至寶。我為他已經丟棄萬事，看作糞土，為要得着基督；

我卻不以性命為念，也不看為寶貴，只要行完我的路程，成就我從主耶穌所領受的職事，證明神恩惠的福音。

除你以外，在天上我有誰呢？除你以外，在地上我也沒有所愛慕的。我的肉體和我的心腸衰殘；但神是我心裏的力量，又是我的福分，直到永遠。

弟兄勝過牠，是因羔羊的血和自己所見證的道。他們雖至於死，也不愛惜性命。

「你的同胞弟兄，或是你的兒女，或是你懷中的妻，或是如同你性命的朋友，若暗中引誘你，說：『我們不如去事奉你和你列祖素來所不認識的別神－是你四圍列國的神。』無論是離你近，離你遠，從地這邊到地那邊的神，你不可依從他，也不可聽從他，眼不可顧惜他。你不可憐恤他，也不可遮庇他，

他論自己的父母說：我未曾看見；他也不承認弟兄，也不認識自己的兒女。這是因利未人遵行你的話，謹守你的約。

我所以恨惡生命；因為在日光之下所行的事我都以為煩惱，都是虛空，都是捕風。我恨惡一切的勞碌，就是我在日光之下的勞碌，因為我得來的必留給我以後的人。那人是智慧是愚昧，誰能知道？他竟要管理我勞碌所得的，就是我在日光之下用智慧所得的。這也是虛空。

雅各也與拉結同房，並且愛拉結勝似愛利亞，於是又服事了拉班七年。耶和華見利亞失寵，就使她生育，拉結卻不生育。

甚至我寧肯噎死，寧肯死亡，勝似留我這一身的骨頭。我厭棄性命，不願永活。你任憑我吧，因我的日子都是虛空。

耶和華說：「我曾愛你們。」你們卻說：「你在何事上愛我們呢？」耶和華說：「以掃不是雅各的哥哥嗎？我卻愛雅各，惡以掃，使他的山嶺荒涼，把他的地業交給曠野的野狗。」

正如經上所記：雅各是我所愛的；以掃是我所惡的。

「人若有二妻，一為所愛，一為所惡，所愛的、所惡的都給他生了兒子，但長子是所惡之妻生的。
