「那愛父親或母親過於愛我的，不配屬於我；那愛兒子或女兒過於愛我的，不配屬於我；

愛惜自己生命的，就失去生命；在這世上恨惡自己生命的，將保全生命到永生。

不但如此，我甚至把一切都看做是損失，因為我把認識我主基督耶穌看為是至高無上的。我為基督耶穌損失了一切，而且把一切都看做是糞土，為要贏得基督，

但是我不把自己的生命看為寶貴，為要跑盡我該跑的路程，完成從主耶穌所領受的服事工作，為神恩典的福音鄭重地做見證。

除你以外，在天上我還有誰呢？除你以外，在地上我也沒有所喜悅的。我的肉體和我的心都在衰竭，但神是我心裡的力量，是我繼業的份，直到永遠。

他們藉著羔羊的血，藉著自己所見證的話語而勝過了牠，他們至死也沒有愛惜自己的生命。

於是我恨惡生命，因為在日光之下所做的事，對我都是悲苦。是的，全是虛空，全是捕風！我恨惡自己一切的勞苦，就是我在日光之下的勞碌所為，因為我必把勞苦所得留給在我之後來的人。那人是智慧是愚笨，誰知道呢？他卻要掌管我勞苦所得的一切，就是我在日光之下用智慧得來的。這也是虛空！

雅各也與拉結同房，並且愛拉結勝過愛莉亞。他又服事了拉班另外七年。耶和華見莉亞被嫌棄，就使她能生育；拉結卻不能生育。

耶和華說：「我愛了你們。」你們竟然問：「你是怎麼愛我們的呢？」耶和華宣告：「以掃難道不是雅各的哥哥嗎？我卻愛雅各，恨以掃；我使以掃的山地變得荒涼，把他的繼業給曠野的豺狗。」

正如經上所記：「我愛雅各，卻恨以掃。」
