Then he told this parable:“ A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it but did not find any.

Then Jesus told a story.“ A man had a fig tree,” he said.“ It was growing in his vineyard. When he went to look for fruit on it, he didn’t find any.

You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit— fruit that will last— and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.

I had planted you like a choice vine of sound and reliable stock. How then did you turn against me into a corrupt, wild vine?

I will sing for the one I love a song about his vineyard: My loved one had a vineyard on a fertile hillside.He dug it up and cleared it of stones and planted it with the choicest vines. He built a watchtower in it and cut out a winepress as well. Then he looked for a crop of good grapes, but it yielded only bad fruit.“ Now you dwellers in Jerusalem and people of Judah, judge between me and my vineyard.What more could have been done for my vineyard than I have done for it? When I looked for good grapes, why did it yield only bad?

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

Not that I desire your gifts; what I desire is that more be credited to your account.

You transplanted a vine from Egypt; you drove out the nations and planted it.You cleared the ground for it, and it took root and filled the land.The mountains were covered with its shade, the mighty cedars with its branches.Its branches reached as far as the Sea, its shoots as far as the River.Why have you broken down its walls so that all who pass by pick its grapes?Boars from the forest ravage it, and insects from the fields feed on it.

Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it,“ May you never bear fruit again!” Immediately the tree withered.When the disciples saw this, they were amazed.“ How did the fig tree wither so quickly?” they asked.

When the harvest time approached, he sent his servants to the tenants to collect his fruit.“ The tenants seized his servants; they beat one, killed another, and stoned a third.Then he sent other servants to them, more than the first time, and the tenants treated them the same way.Last of all, he sent his son to them.‘ They will respect my son,’ he said.“ But when the tenants saw the son, they said to each other,‘ This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him and take his inheritance.’So they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.“ Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?”

The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry.Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs.Then he said to the tree,“ May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard him say it.

At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants so they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed.He sent another servant, but that one also they beat and treated shamefully and sent away empty-handed.He sent still a third, and they wounded him and threw him out.“ Then the owner of the vineyard said,‘ What shall I do? I will send my son, whom I love; perhaps they will respect him.’“ But when the tenants saw him, they talked the matter over.‘ This is the heir,’ they said.‘ Let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’
