“ Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.

“ Jerusalem! Jerusalem! You kill the prophets and throw stones in order to kill those who are sent to you. Many times I have wanted to gather your people together. I have wanted to be like a hen who gathers her chicks under her wings. And you would not let me.

“ Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her. How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!

“ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were not willing!

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that killeth the prophets, and stoneth them that are sent unto her! how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her own brood under her wings, and ye would not!

“ Jerusalem, Jerusalem! She who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her. How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!

Which one of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? They killed those who had previously announced the coming of the Righteous One, and you have now become betrayers and murderers of Him;

As an eagle stirs up its nest, And hovers over its young, He spread His wings, He caught them, He carried them on His pinions.The Lord alone guided him, And there was no foreign god with him.

“ Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who have been sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling.Behold, your house is being left to you desolate!For I say to you, from now on you will not see Me until you say,‘ Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord!’ ”

When He approached Jerusalem, He saw the city and wept over it,saying,“ If you had known on this day, even you, the conditions for peace! But now they have been hidden from your eyes.

and they will level you to the ground, and throw down your children within you, and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.”

For this is what the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, has said:“ In repentance and rest you will be saved, In quietness and trust is your strength.” But you were not willing,

But this is what I commanded them, saying,‘ Obey My voice, and I will be your God, and you will be My people; and you shall walk entirely in the way which I command you, so that it may go well for you.’Yet they did not obey or incline their ear, but walked by their own advice and in the stubbornness of their evil hearts, and they went backward and not forward.

But Jesus turned to them and said,“ Daughters of Jerusalem, stop weeping for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.

May the Lord reward your work, and may your wages be full from the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.”

So shout for joy, you sons of Zion, And rejoice in the Lord your God; For He has given you the early rain for your vindication. And He has brought down for you the rain, The early and latter rain as before.

For these things I weep; My eyes run down with water; Because far from me is a comforter, One to restore my soul. My children are desolate Because the enemy has prevailed.”

Yet I sent you all My servants the prophets again and again, saying,“ Oh, do not do this abominable thing which I hate.”But they did not listen or incline their ears to turn from their wickedness, so as not to burn sacrifices to other gods.Therefore My wrath and My anger gushed out and burned in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, so they have become ruins and a desolation as it is this day.

If only they were wise and they understood this; If only they would discern their future!

“ Do not be like your fathers, to whom the former prophets proclaimed, saying,‘ This is what the Lord of armies says:“ Return now from your evil ways and from your evil deeds.” ’ But they did not listen or pay attention to Me,” declares the Lord.

Now this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is enslaved with her children.But the Jerusalem above is free; she is our mother.

“ But they became rebellious and revolted against You, And threw Your Law behind their backs And killed Your prophets who had admonished them In order to bring them back to You, And they committed great blasphemies.

He will cover you with His pinions, And under His wings you may take refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and wall.

Why was there no one when I came? When I called, why was there no one to answer? Is My hand so short that it cannot redeem? Or do I have no power to rescue? Behold, I dry up the sea with My rebuke, I turn rivers into a wilderness; Their fish stink for lack of water, And die of thirst.

This is what the Lord says:“ Stand by the ways and see and ask for the ancient paths, Where the good way is, and walk in it; Then you will find a resting place for your souls. But they said,‘ We will not walk in it.’

Be gracious to me, God, be gracious to me, For my soul takes refuge in You; And in the shadow of Your wings I will take refuge Until destruction passes by.

Oh that My people would listen to Me, That Israel would walk in My ways!

Because of the sins of her prophets And the wrongdoings of her priests, Who have shed in her midst The blood of the righteous,

Now Saul approved of putting Stephen to death. And on that day a great persecution began against the church in Jerusalem, and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except for the apostles.

If only they had such a heart in them, to fear Me and keep all My commandments always, so that it would go well with them and with their sons forever!

They went on stoning Stephen as he called on the Lord and said,“ Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!”

And the vine growers took his slaves and beat one, killed another, and stoned another.Again, he sent other slaves, more than the first; and they did the same things to them.

and the rest seized his slaves and treated them abusively, and then killed them.

But you disowned the Holy and Righteous One, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you,but put to death the Prince of life, whom God raised from the dead, a fact to which we are witnesses.

However, You remained patient with them for many years, And admonished them by Your Spirit through Your prophets, Yet they would not listen. Therefore You handed them over to the peoples of the lands.

Israel shall be joyful in his Maker; The sons of Zion shall rejoice in their King.

“ The words of Jonadab the son of Rechab have been followed, which he commanded his sons: not to drink wine. And they do not drink wine to this day, for they have obeyed their father’s command. But I have spoken to you again and again, yet you have not listened to Me.

This is what the Lord says, He who is your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:“ I am the Lord your God, who teaches you to benefit, Who leads you in the way you should go.If only you had paid attention to My commandments! Then your well being would have been like a river, And your righteousness like the waves of the sea.Your descendants would have been like the sand, And your offspring like its grains; Their name would never be eliminated or destroyed from My presence.”

Because I called and you refused, I stretched out my hand and no one paid attention;And you neglected all my advice And did not want my rebuke;I will also laugh at your disaster; I will mock when your dread comes,When your dread comes like a storm And your disaster comes like a whirlwind, When distress and anguish come upon you.Then they will call on me, but I will not answer; They will seek me diligently but will not find me,Because they hated knowledge And did not choose the fear of the Lord.They did not accept my advice, They disdainfully rejected every rebuke from me.

And he sent his slaves to call those who had been invited to the wedding feast, and they were unwilling to come.

Yet the Lord, the God of their fathers, sent word to them again and again by His messengers, because He had compassion on His people and on His dwelling place;but they continually mocked the messengers of God, despised His words, and scoffed at His prophets, until the wrath of the Lord rose against His people, until there was no remedy.

How precious is Your mercy, God! And the sons of mankind take refuge in the shadow of Your wings.

I, the Lord, am your God, Who brought you up from the land of Egypt; Open your mouth wide and I will fill it.“ But My people did not listen to My voice, And Israel did not obey Me.

So My people are determined to turn from Me. Though they call them to the One on high, None at all exalts Him.

“ In vain I have struck your sons; They did not accept discipline. Your sword has devoured your prophets Like a destroying lion.

And they brought Uriah from Egypt and led him to King Jehoiakim, who killed him with a sword and threw his dead body into the burial place of the common people.

Keep me as the apple of the eye; Hide me in the shadow of Your wings
