But his creditor wouldn’t wait. He had the man arrested and put in prison until the debt could be paid in full.

Go and be reconciled to that person. Then come and offer your sacrifice to God.“ When you are on the way to court with your adversary, settle your differences quickly. Otherwise, your accuser may hand you over to the judge, who will hand you over to an officer, and you will be thrown into prison.And if that happens, you surely won’t be free again until you have paid the last penny.

don’t be in a hurry to go to court. For what will you do in the end if your neighbor deals you a shameful defeat?When arguing with your neighbor, don’t betray another person’s secret.

For God says,“ At just the right time, I heard you. On the day of salvation, I helped you.” Indeed, the“ right time” is now. Today is the day of salvation.

Honest people can reason with him, so I would be forever acquitted by my judge.

Therefore, let all the godly pray to you while there is still time, that they may not drown in the floodwaters of judgment.

“ Submit to God, and you will have peace; then things will go well for you.

Abigail wasted no time. But he has repaid me evil for good.May God strike me and kill me if even one man of his household is still alive tomorrow morning!”When Abigail saw David, she quickly got off her donkey and bowed low before him.She fell at his feet and said,“ I accept all blame in this matter, my lord. Please listen to what I have to say.I know Nabal is a wicked and ill tempered man; please don’t pay any attention to him. He is a fool, just as his name suggests. But I never even saw the young men you sent.“ Now, my lord, as surely as the Lord lives and you yourself live, since the Lord has kept you from murdering and taking vengeance into your own hands, let all your enemies and those who try to harm you be as cursed as Nabal is.And here is a present that I, your servant, have brought to you and your young men.Please forgive me if I have offended you in any way. The Lord will surely reward you with a lasting dynasty, for you are fighting the Lord’s battles. And you have not done wrong throughout your entire life.“ Even when you are chased by those who seek to kill you, your life is safe in the care of the Lord your God, secure in his treasure pouch! But the lives of your enemies will disappear like stones shot from a sling!When the Lord has done all he promised and has made you leader of Israel,don’t let this be a blemish on your record. Then your conscience won’t have to bear the staggering burden of needless bloodshed and vengeance. And when the Lord has done these great things for you, please remember me, your servant!”David replied to Abigail,“ Praise the Lord, the God of Israel, who has sent you to meet me today!Thank God for your good sense! Bless you for keeping me from murder and from carrying out vengeance with my own hands.For I swear by the Lord, the God of Israel, who has kept me from hurting you, that if you had not hurried out to meet me, not one of Nabal’s men would still be alive tomorrow morning.”Then David accepted her present and told her,“ Return home in peace. I have heard what you said. We will not kill your husband.”

So he went and preached to the spirits in prison—

My child, if you have put up security for a friend’s debt or agreed to guarantee the debt of a stranger—if you have trapped yourself by your agreement and are caught by what you said—follow my advice and save yourself, for you have placed yourself at your friend’s mercy. Now swallow your pride; go and beg to have your name erased.Don’t put it off; do it now! Don’t rest until you do.Save yourself like a gazelle escaping from a hunter, like a bird fleeing from a net.

“ Or what king would go to war against another king without first sitting down with his counselors to discuss whether his army of 10,000 could defeat the 20,000 soldiers marching against him?And if he can’t, he will send a delegation to discuss terms of peace while the enemy is still far away.

Seek the Lord while you can find him. Call on him now while he is near.

When the thousand years come to an end, Satan will be let out of his prison.

Then Jacob sent messengers ahead to his brother, Esau, who was living in the region of Seir in the land of Edom.He told them,“ Give this message to my master Esau:‘ Humble greetings from your servant Jacob. Until now I have been living with Uncle Laban,and now I own cattle, donkeys, flocks of sheep and goats, and many servants, both men and women. I have sent these messengers to inform my lord of my coming, hoping that you will be friendly to me.’”After delivering the message, the messengers returned to Jacob and reported,“ We met your brother, Esau, and he is already on his way to meet you— with an army of 400 men!”Jacob was terrified at the news. He divided his household, along with the flocks and herds and camels, into two groups.He thought,“ If Esau meets one group and attacks it, perhaps the other group can escape.”Then Jacob prayed,“ O God of my grandfather Abraham, and God of my father, Isaac— O Lord, you told me,‘ Return to your own land and to your relatives.’ And you promised me,‘ I will treat you kindly.’I am not worthy of all the unfailing love and faithfulness you have shown to me, your servant. When I left home and crossed the Jordan River, I owned nothing except a walking stick. Now my household fills two large camps!O Lord, please rescue me from the hand of my brother, Esau. I am afraid that he is coming to attack me, along with my wives and children.But you promised me,‘ I will surely treat you kindly, and I will multiply your descendants until they become as numerous as the sands along the seashore— too many to count.’”Jacob stayed where he was for the night. Then he selected these gifts from his possessions to present to his brother, Esau:200 female goats, 20 male goats, 200 ewes, 20 rams,30 female camels with their young, 40 cows, 10 bulls, 20 female donkeys, and 10 male donkeys.He divided these animals into herds and assigned each to different servants. Then he told his servants,“ Go ahead of me with the animals, but keep some distance between the herds.”He gave these instructions to the men leading the first group:“ When my brother, Esau, meets you, he will ask,‘ Whose servants are you? Where are you going? Who owns these animals?’You must reply,‘ They belong to your servant Jacob, but they are a gift for his master Esau. Look, he is coming right behind us.’”Jacob gave the same instructions to the second and third herdsmen and to all who followed behind the herds:“ You must say the same thing to Esau when you meet him.And be sure to say,‘ Look, your servant Jacob is right behind us.’” Jacob thought,“ I will try to appease him by sending gifts ahead of me. When I see him in person, perhaps he will be friendly to me.”So the gifts were sent on ahead, while Jacob himself spent that night in the camp.During the night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two servant wives, and his eleven sons and crossed the Jabbok River with them.After taking them to the other side, he sent over all his possessions.This left Jacob all alone in the camp, and a man came and wrestled with him until the dawn began to break.When the man saw that he would not win the match, he touched Jacob’s hip and wrenched it out of its socket.Then the man said,“ Let me go, for the dawn is breaking!” But Jacob said,“ I will not let you go unless you bless me.”“ What is your name?” the man asked. He replied,“ Jacob.”“ Your name will no longer be Jacob,” the man told him.“ From now on you will be called Israel, because you have fought with God and with men and have won.”

That is why the Holy Spirit says,“ Today when you hear his voice,don’t harden your hearts as Israel did when they rebelled, when they tested me in the wilderness.There your ancestors tested and tried my patience, even though they saw my miracles for forty years.So I was angry with them, and I said,‘ Their hearts always turn away from me. They refuse to do what I tell them.’So in my anger I took an oath:‘ They will never enter my place of rest.’”Be careful then, dear brothers and sisters. Make sure that your own hearts are not evil and unbelieving, turning you away from the living God.You must warn each other every day, while it is still“ today,” so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God.

But you are obsessed with whether the godless will be judged. Don’t worry, judgment and justice will be upheld.But watch out, or you may be seduced by wealth. Don’t let yourself be bribed into sin.

“ Work hard to enter the narrow door to God’s Kingdom, for many will try to enter but will fail.When the master of the house has locked the door, it will be too late. You will stand outside knocking and pleading,‘ Lord, open the door for us!’ But he will reply,‘ I don’t know you or where you come from.’Then you will say,‘ But we ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.’And he will reply,‘ I tell you, I don’t know you or where you come from. Get away from me, all you who do evil.’“ There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, for you will see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in the Kingdom of God, but you will be thrown out.

Repent, all of you who forget me, or I will tear you apart, and no one will help you.
