那時，神的靈感動祭司耶何耶大的兒子撒迦利亞，他就站在上面對民說：「神如此說：你們為何干犯耶和華的誡命，以致不得亨通呢？因為你們離棄耶和華，所以他也離棄你們。」眾民同心謀害撒迦利亞，就照王的吩咐，在耶和華殿的院內用石頭打死他。這樣，約阿施王不想念撒迦利亞的父親耶何耶大向自己所施的恩，殺了他的兒子。撒迦利亞臨死的時候說：「願耶和華鑒察伸冤！」

亞伯因着信，獻祭與神，比該隱所獻的更美，因此便得了稱義的見證，就是神指他禮物作的見證。他雖然死了，卻因這信，仍舊說話。

不可像該隱；他是屬那惡者，殺了他的兄弟。為甚麼殺了他呢？因自己的行為是惡的，兄弟的行為是善的。

該隱與他兄弟亞伯說話；二人正在田間。該隱起來打他兄弟亞伯，把他殺了。耶和華對該隱說：「你兄弟亞伯在哪裏？」他說：「我不知道！我豈是看守我兄弟的嗎？」耶和華說：「你做了甚麼事呢？你兄弟的血有聲音從地裏向我哀告。地開了口，從你手裏接受你兄弟的血。現在你必從這地受咒詛。

叫世上所流義人的血都歸到你們身上，從義人亞伯的血起，直到你們在殿和壇中間所殺的巴拉加的兒子撒迦利亞的血為止。

大流士王第二年八月，耶和華的話臨到易多的孫子、比利家的兒子先知撒迦利亞，說：

並新約的中保耶穌，以及所灑的血；這血所說的比亞伯的血所說的更美。

你要對他們說：這就是不聽從耶和華－他們神的話、不受教訓的國民；從他們的口中，誠實滅絕了。」
