For this reason also the wisdom of God said,‘ I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and persecute,’

因此天主之妙慧、曾作警言曰：「予遣先知宗徒於若輩有為所害、有為所辱、

Because of this, God in his wisdom said,‘ I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.’

You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends, and they will have some of you put to death.You will be hated by everyone because of my name.

About that time King Herod laid hands on some from the church to harm them.He had James, the brother of John, executed with a sword.

Meanwhile Saul, still breathing out threats to murder the Lord’s disciples, went to the high priestand requested letters from him to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any who belonged to the Way, either men or women, he could bring them as prisoners to Jerusalem.

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the farthest parts of the earth.”

And when the blood of your witness Stephen was shed, I myself was standing nearby, approving, and guarding the cloaks of those who were killing him.’

and repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.

They will put you out of the synagogue, yet a time is coming when the one who kills you will think he is offering service to God.

But to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God.

But they covered their ears, shouting out with a loud voice, and rushed at him with one intent.When they had driven him out of the city, they began to stone him, and the witnesses laid their cloaks at the feet of a young man named Saul.They continued to stone Stephen while he prayed,“ Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!”Then he fell to his knees and cried out with a loud voice,“ Lord, do not hold this sin against them!” When he had said this, he died.And Saul agreed completely with killing him. Now on that day a great persecution began against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were forced to scatter throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria.

Five times I received from the Jews forty lashes less one.Three times I was beaten with a rod. Once I received a stoning. Three times I suffered shipwreck. A night and a day I spent adrift in the open sea.

Does not wisdom call out? Does not understanding raise her voice?At the top of the elevated places along the way, at the intersection of the paths she takes her stand;beside the gates opening into the city, at the entrance of the doorways she cries out:“ To you, O people, I call out, and my voice calls to all mankind.You who are naive, discern wisdom! And you fools, understand discernment!Listen, for I will speak excellent things, and my lips will utter what is right.For my mouth speaks truth, and my lips hate wickedness.All the words of my mouth are righteous; there is nothing in them twisted or crooked.All of them are clear to the discerning and upright to those who find knowledge.Receive my instruction rather than silver, and knowledge rather than choice gold.For wisdom is better than rubies, and desirable things cannot be compared to her.“ I, wisdom, live with prudence, and I find knowledge and discretion.

I persecuted this Way even to the point of death, tying up both men and women and putting them in prison,as both the high priest and the whole council of elders can testify about me. From them I also received letters to the brothers in Damascus, and I was on my way to make arrests there and bring the prisoners to Jerusalem to be punished.

The rest seized his slaves, insolently mistreated them, and killed them.

“ For this reason I am sending you prophets and wise men and experts in the law, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town,so that on you will come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.I tell you the truth, this generation will be held responsible for all these things!

And that is what I did in Jerusalem: Not only did I lock up many of the saints in prisons by the authority I received from the chief priests, but I also cast my vote against them when they were sentenced to death.I punished them often in all the synagogues and tried to force them to blaspheme. Because I was so furiously enraged at them, I went to persecute them even in foreign cities.

But Saul was trying to destroy the church; entering one house after another, he dragged off both men and women and put them in prison.
