Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles, and[ some] of them they shall slay and persecute:

因此天主之妙慧、曾作警言曰：「予遣先知宗徒於若輩有為所害、有為所辱、

Because of this, God in his wisdom said,‘ I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.’

Therefore also the Wisdom of God said,‘ I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and persecute,’

To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding;To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.A wise[ man] will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.

And ye shall be betrayed both by parents, and brethren, and kinsfolks, and friends; and[ some] of you shall they cause to be put to death.And ye shall be hated of all[ men] for my name’s sake.

Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth[ his] hands to vex certain of the church.And he killed James the brother of John with the sword.

And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest,And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem.

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

And when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting unto his death, and kept the raiment of them that slew him.

And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars:She hath killed her beasts; she hath mingled her wine; she hath also furnished her table.She hath sent forth her maidens: she crieth upon the highest places of the city,

And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.

But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.

Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord,And cast[ him] out of the city, and stoned[ him]: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man’s feet, whose name was Saul.And they stoned Stephen, calling upon[ God], and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.And Saul was consenting unto his death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles.

Of the Jews five times received I forty[ stripes] save one.Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep;

Doth not wisdom cry? and understanding put forth her voice?She standeth in the top of high places, by the way in the places of the paths.She crieth at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the coming in at the doors.Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice[ is] to the sons of man.O ye simple, understand wisdom: and, ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart.Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of my lips[ shall be] right things.For my mouth shall speak truth; and wickedness[ is] an abomination to my lips.All the words of my mouth[ are] in righteousness;[ there is] nothing froward or perverse in them.They[ are] all plain to him that understandeth, and right to them that find knowledge.Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold.For wisdom[ is] better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions.

And I persecuted this way unto the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.As also the high priest doth bear me witness, and all the estate of the elders: from whom also I received letters unto the brethren, and went to Damascus, to bring them which were there bound unto Jerusalem, for to be punished.

And the remnant took his servants, and entreated[ them] spitefully, and slew[ them].

Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and[ some] of them ye shall kill and crucify; and[ some] of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute[ them] from city to city:That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.

Which thing I also did in Jerusalem: and many of the saints did I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I gave my voice against[ them].And I punished them oft in every synagogue, and compelled[ them] to blaspheme; and being exceedingly mad against them, I persecuted[ them] even unto strange cities.

As for Saul, he made havock of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed[ them] to prison.
