“ What sorrow awaits you Pharisees! For you love to sit in the seats of honor in the synagogues and receive respectful greetings as you walk in the marketplaces.

Woe unto you Pharisees! for ye love the chief seats in the synagogues, and the salutations in the marketplaces.

“ Beware of the scribes, who want to go around in long robes and who love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the places of honor at banquets.

He also said in his teaching,“ Beware of the scribes, who want to go around in long robes and who want greetings in the marketplaces,the best seats in the synagogues, and the places of honor at banquets.

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves.

He told a parable to those who were invited, when he noticed how they would choose the best places for themselves:“ When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, don’t sit in the place of honor, because a more distinguished person than you may have been invited by your host.The one who invited both of you may come and say to you,‘ Give your place to this man,’ and then in humiliation, you will proceed to take the lowest place.“ But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when the one who invited you comes, he will say to you,‘ Friend, move up higher.’ You will then be honored in the presence of all the other guests.For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Pride comes before destruction, and an arrogant spirit before a fall.

For if someone comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and dressed in fine clothes, and a poor person dressed in filthy clothes also comes in,if you look with favor on the one wearing the fine clothes and say,“ Sit here in a good place,” and yet you say to the poor person,“ Stand over there,” or“ Sit here on the floor by my footstool,”haven’t you made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?
