The Pharisees came and began to question Jesus. To test him, they asked him for a sign from heaven.He sighed deeply and said,“ Why does this generation ask for a sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to it.” (niv)

Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him,“ Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.”He answered,“ A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now something greater than Jonah is here.The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, and now something greater than Solomon is here. Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, (niv)

Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, saying:“ Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. (niv)

“ You unbelieving and perverse generation,” Jesus replied,“ how long shall I stay with you and put up with you? Bring your son here.” (niv)

So they asked him,“ What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do? (niv)

If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.” (niv)

The Jews then responded to him,“ What sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?” (niv)

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them:“ You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? (niv)

Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said:“ If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters— yes, even their own life— such a person cannot be my disciple. (niv)

Therefore this generation will be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the beginning of the world, (niv)

“ You stiff- necked people! Your hearts and ears are still uncircumcised. You are just like your ancestors: You always resist the Holy Spirit!Was there ever a prophet your ancestors did not persecute? They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him— (niv)

You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. (niv)

“ But you— come here, you children of a sorceress, you offspring of adulterers and prostitutes!Who are you mocking? At whom do you sneer and stick out your tongue? Are you not a brood of rebels, the offspring of liars? (niv)

The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven.He replied,“ When evening comes, you say,‘ It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’and in the morning,‘ Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.” Jesus then left them and went away. (niv)

Therefore I am sending you prophets and sages and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify; others you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town.And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.Truly I tell you, all this will come on this generation. (niv)
