百夫長和跟他一起看守耶穌的士兵，看見了地震和所發生的事情，就十分懼怕，說：“這個人真是神的兒子。”

耶穌卻不作聲。大祭司又對他說：“我指著永生的神要你起誓，告訴我們你是不是基督、神的兒子。”耶穌回答：“你已經說了﹙“你已經說了”或譯：“這是你說的。”﹚；但我告訴你們：從今以後，你們要看見人子，坐在權能者的右邊，駕著天上的雲降臨。”

誰能使潔淨出於污穢呢？無人有此本事。

這樣在神面前，人怎能稱為義呢？婦人所生的，怎能算為潔淨呢？

我們從前也都和他們在一起，放縱肉體的私慾，隨著肉體和心意所喜好的去行；我們與別人一樣，生來都是可怒的兒女。

何況那可憎又腐敗，喝罪孽如同喝水的世人呢？

看哪，我是在罪孽裡生的；我母親在罪中懷了我。

受膏者說：“我要宣告耶和華的諭旨：耶和華對我說：‘你是我的兒子，我今日生了你。

船上的人都拜他，說：“你真是神的兒子。”

但把這些事記下來，是要你們信耶穌是基督，是神的兒子，並且使你們信了，可以因他的名得生命。

神的兒子（有些抄本無“神的兒子”一句）耶穌基督福音的開始。

這樣的一位大祭司，對我們本是合適的。他是聖潔、沒有邪惡、沒有玷污、從罪人中分別出來、高過眾天的。他不必像那些大祭司，天天先為自己的罪獻祭，然後為人民的罪獻祭；因為他獻上了自己，就把這事一次而永遠的成全了。律法所立的大祭司，都是軟弱的人；可是在律法以後，用誓言所立的兒子，卻是成為完全直到永遠的。

試探者前來對他說：“你若是神的兒子，就吩咐這些石頭變成食物吧！”
