The Lord was gracious to Hannah. Over a period of years she had three more sons and two daughters. During that whole time the boy Samuel grew up serving the Lord.

The angel of the Lord appeared to Manoah’s wife. He said,“ You are not able to have children. But you are going to become pregnant. You will have a baby boy.Make sure you do not drink any kind of wine. Also make sure you do not eat anything that is‘ unclean.’You will become pregnant. You will have a son. The hair on his head must never be cut. That is because the boy will be a Nazirite. He will be set apart to God from the day he is born. He will take the lead in saving Israel from the power of the Philistines.”

Children are a gift from the Lord. They are a reward from him.Children who are born to people when they are young are like arrows in the hands of a soldier.Blessed are those who have many children. They won’t be put to shame when they go up against their enemies in court.

He gives children to the woman who doesn’t have any children. He makes her a happy mother in her own home. Praise the Lord.

When the child was eight days old, he was circumcised. At the same time he was named Jesus. This was the name the angel had given him before his mother became pregnant.

Here is my covenant that you and your family after you must keep. You and every male among you must be circumcised.

He’ll stay there for the rest of his life.”Her husband Elkanah told her,“ Do what you think is best. Stay here at home until Samuel doesn’t need you to breast- feed him anymore. May the Lord make his promise to you come true.” So Hannah stayed home. She breast- fed her son until he didn’t need her milk anymore.

But the Lord said to him,“ May peace be with you! Do not be afraid. You are not going to die.”

Then the Lord said,“ Name him Lo- Ammi.” Lo- Ammi means Not My People.“ That’s because Israel is no longer my people. And I am no longer their God.“ But the time will come when the people of Israel will be like the sand on the seashore. It can’t be measured or counted. Now it is said about them,‘ You are not my people.’ But at that time they will be called‘ children of the living God.’

She is going to have a son. You must give him the name Jesus. That’s because he will save his people from their sins.”

Gomer became pregnant again. She had a daughter. Then the Lord said to Hosea,“ Name her Lo- Ruhamah.” Lo- Ruhamah means Not Loved.“ That’s because I will no longer show love to the people of Israel. I will not forgive them anymore.

Then the Lord said to Hosea,“ Name him Jezreel. That’s because I will soon punish Jehu’s royal family. He killed many people at the city of Jezreel. So I will put an end to the kingdom of Israel.

But his mother spoke up.“ No!” she said.“ He must be called John.”They said to her,“ No one among your relatives has that name.”Then they motioned to his father. They wanted to find out what he would like to name the child.He asked for something to write on. Then he wrote,“ His name is John.” Everyone was amazed.

“ Don’t be alarmed,” he said.“ You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. But he has risen! He is not here! See the place where they had put him.

Right away Jesus called out to them,“ Be brave! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

Rebekah couldn’t have children. So Isaac prayed to the Lord for her. And the Lord answered his prayer. His wife Rebekah became pregnant.
