“ But no devoted thing that a man devotes to the Lord, of anything that he has, whether man or beast, or of his inherited field, shall be sold or redeemed; every devoted thing is most holy to the Lord.

“‘ But nothing that a person owns and devotes to the Lord— whether a human being or an animal or family land— may be sold or redeemed; everything so devoted is most holy to the Lord.

“‘ But nothing a person owns and sets apart to the Lord can be sold or bought back. It does not matter whether it is a human being or an animal or a family’s land. Everything set apart to the Lord is very holy to him.

“ However, anything specially set apart for the Lord— whether a person, an animal, or family property— must never be sold or bought back. Anything devoted in this way has been set apart as holy, and it belongs to the Lord.

“ Nothing that a man permanently sets apart to the LORD from all he owns, whether a person, an animal, or his inherited landholding, can be sold or redeemed; everything set apart is especially holy to the LORD.

‘ Nevertheless, anything which someone sets apart to the Lord for destruction out of all that he has, of man or animal or of the field of his own property, shall not be sold nor redeemed. Anything set apart for destruction is most holy to the Lord.

‘ Nevertheless no devoted offering that a man may devote to the Lord of all that he has, both man and beast, or the field of his possession, shall be sold or redeemed; every devoted offering is most holy to the Lord.

Notwithstanding, no devoted thing, that a man shall devote unto Jehovah of all that he hath, whether of man or beast, or of the field of his possession, shall be sold or redeemed: every devoted thing is most holy unto Jehovah.

“ Nothing that a man permanently sets apart to the Lord from all he owns, whether a person, an animal, or his inherited landholding, can be sold or redeemed; everything set apart is especially holy to the Lord.

Notwithstanding no devoted thing, that a man shall devote unto the LORD of all that he hath,[ both] of man and beast, and of the field of his possession, shall be sold or redeemed: every devoted thing[ is] most holy unto the LORD.

“‘ Surely anything which a man permanently dedicates to the LORD from all that belongs to him, whether from people, animals, or his landed property, must be neither sold nor redeemed; anything permanently dedicated is most holy to the LORD.

“‘ Notwithstanding, no devoted thing that a man devotes to Yahweh of all that he has, whether of man or animal, or of the field of his possession, shall be sold or redeemed. Everything that is permanently devoted is most holy to Yahweh.

And the city and all that is within it shall be devoted to the Lord for destruction. Only Rahab the prostitute and all who are with her in her house shall live, because she hid the messengers whom we sent.But you, keep yourselves from the things devoted to destruction, lest when you have devoted them you take any of the devoted things and make the camp of Israel a thing for destruction and bring trouble upon it.But all silver and gold, and every vessel of bronze and iron, are holy to the Lord; they shall go into the treasury of the Lord.”

But in the cities of these peoples that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance, you shall save alive nothing that breathes,but you shall devote them to complete destruction, the Hittites and the Amorites, the Canaanites and the Perizzites, the Hivites and the Jebusites, as the Lord your God has commanded,

“ Whoever sacrifices to any god, other than the Lord alone, shall be devoted to destruction.

But the field, when it is released in the jubilee, shall be a holy gift to the Lord, like a field that has been devoted. The priest shall be in possession of it.

Therefore when the Lord your God has given you rest from all your enemies around you, in the land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance to possess, you shall blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven; you shall not forget.

“ Then he will say to those on his left,‘ Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

you shall surely put the inhabitants of that city to the sword, devoting it to destruction, all who are in it and its cattle, with the edge of the sword.You shall gather all its spoil into the midst of its open square and burn the city and all its spoil with fire, as a whole burnt offering to the Lord your God. It shall be a heap forever. It shall not be built again.

For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written,“ Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.”

But the people of Israel broke faith in regard to the devoted things, for Achan the son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of the devoted things. And the anger of the Lord burned against the people of Israel.

Yet we cannot give them wives from our daughters.” For the people of Israel had sworn,“ Cursed be he who gives a wife to Benjamin.”

And the people of Israel said,“ Which of all the tribes of Israel did not come up in the assembly to the Lord?” For they had taken a great oath concerning him who did not come up to the Lord to Mizpah, saying,“ He shall surely be put to death.”

Then Samuel said,“ Bring here to me Agag the king of the Amalekites.” And Agag came to him cheerfully. Agag said,“ Surely the bitterness of death is past.”And Samuel said,“ As your sword has made women childless, so shall your mother be childless among women.” And Samuel hacked Agag to pieces before the Lord in Gilgal.

“ When the Lord your God brings you into the land that you are entering to take possession of it, and clears away many nations before you, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations more numerous and mightier than you,and when the Lord your God gives them over to you, and you defeat them, then you must devote them to complete destruction. You shall make no covenant with them and show no mercy to them.

If anyone has no love for the Lord, let him be accursed. Our Lord, come!

Joshua laid an oath on them at that time, saying,“ Cursed before the Lord be the man who rises up and rebuilds this city, Jericho.“ At the cost of his firstborn shall he lay its foundation, and at the cost of his youngest son shall he set up its gates.”

And the men of Israel had been hard pressed that day, so Saul had laid an oath on the people, saying,“ Cursed be the man who eats food until it is evening and I am avenged on my enemies.” So none of the people had tasted food.Now when all the people came to the forest, behold, there was honey on the ground.And when the people entered the forest, behold, the honey was dropping, but no one put his hand to his mouth, for the people feared the oath.But Jonathan had not heard his father charge the people with the oath, so he put out the tip of the staff that was in his hand and dipped it in the honeycomb and put his hand to his mouth, and his eyes became bright.Then one of the people said,“ Your father strictly charged the people with an oath, saying,‘ Cursed be the man who eats food this day.’” And the people were faint.

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us— for it is written,“ Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”—

Every devoted thing in Israel shall be yours.

When it was day, the Jews made a plot and bound themselves by an oath neither to eat nor drink till they had killed Paul.There were more than forty who made this conspiracy.They went to the chief priests and elders and said,“ We have strictly bound ourselves by an oath to taste no food till we have killed Paul.

For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh.

And the Lord sent you on a mission and said,‘ Go, devote to destruction the sinners, the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are consumed.’

And Jephthah made a vow to the Lord and said,“ If you will give the Ammonites into my hand,then whatever comes out from the doors of my house to meet me when I return in peace from the Ammonites shall be the Lord’s, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.”

And Israel vowed a vow to the Lord and said,“ If you will indeed give this people into my hand, then I will devote their cities to destruction.”And the Lord heeded the voice of Israel and gave over the Canaanites, and they devoted them and their cities to destruction. So the name of the place was called Hormah.

Israel has sinned; they have transgressed my covenant that I commanded them; they have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen and lied and put them among their own belongings.Therefore the people of Israel cannot stand before their enemies. They turn their backs before their enemies, because they have become devoted for destruction. I will be with you no more, unless you destroy the devoted things from among you.Get up! Consecrate the people and say,‘ Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow; for thus says the Lord, God of Israel,“ There are devoted things in your midst, O Israel. You cannot stand before your enemies until you take away the devoted things from among you.”

This is what you shall do: every male and every woman that has lain with a male you shall devote to destruction.”

And Joshua said,“ Why did you bring trouble on us? The Lord brings trouble on you today.” And all Israel stoned him with stones. They burned them with fire and stoned them with stones.

And Saul said,“ Come here, all you leaders of the people, and know and see how this sin has arisen today.For as the Lord lives who saves Israel, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die.” But there was not a man among all the people who answered him.Then he said to all Israel,“ You shall be on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side.” And the people said to Saul,“ Do what seems good to you.”Therefore Saul said,“ O Lord God of Israel, why have you not answered your servant this day? If this guilt is in me or in Jonathan my son, O Lord, God of Israel, give Urim. But if this guilt is in your people Israel, give Thummim.” And Jonathan and Saul were taken, but the people escaped.Then Saul said,“ Cast the lot between me and my son Jonathan.” And Jonathan was taken.Then Saul said to Jonathan,“ Tell me what you have done.” And Jonathan told him,“ I tasted a little honey with the tip of the staff that was in my hand. Here I am; I will die.”And Saul said,“ God do so to me and more also; you shall surely die, Jonathan.”Then the people said to Saul,“ Shall Jonathan die, who has worked this great salvation in Israel? Far from it! As the Lord lives, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground, for he has worked with God this day.” So the people ransomed Jonathan, so that he did not die.

Now go and strike Amalek and devote to destruction all that they have. Do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’”
