“ If your brother among you becomes destitute and sells himself to you, you must not force him to do slave labor.

“‘ If any of your fellow Israelites become poor and sell themselves to you, do not make them work as slaves.

“‘ Suppose any of your own people become poor. And suppose they sell themselves to you. Then do not make them work as slaves.

“ If your brother becomes poor beside you and sells himself to you, you shall not make him serve as a slave:

“ If one of your fellow Israelites falls into poverty and is forced to sell himself to you, do not treat him as a slave.

‘ Now if a countryman of yours becomes so poor with regard to you that he sells himself to you, you shall not subject him to a slave’s service.

‘ And if one of your brethren who dwells by you becomes poor, and sells himself to you, you shall not compel him to serve as a slave.

And if thy brother be waxed poor with thee, and sell himself unto thee; thou shalt not make him to serve as a bond- servant.

“ If your brother among you becomes destitute and sells himself to you, you must not force him to do slave labor.

And if thy brother[ that dwelleth] by thee be waxen poor, and be sold unto thee; thou shalt not compel him to serve as a bondservant:

“‘ If your brother becomes impoverished with regard to you so that he sells himself to you, you must not subject him to slave service.

“‘ If your brother has grown poor among you, and sells himself to you, you shall not make him to serve as a slave.

“ When you buy a Hebrew slave, he is to serve for six years; then in the seventh he is to leave as a free man without paying anything.

But Solomon did not consign the Israelites to slavery; they were soldiers, his servants, his commanders, his captains, and commanders of his chariots and his cavalry.

We and our children are just like our countrymen and their children, yet we are subjecting our sons and daughters to slavery. Some of our daughters are already enslaved, but we are powerless because our fields and vineyards belong to others.”

One of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha,“ Your servant, my husband, has died. You know that your servant feared the LORD. Now the creditor is coming to take my two children as his slaves.”

You may leave them to your sons after you to inherit as property; you can make them slaves for life. But concerning your brothers, the Israelites, you must not rule over one another harshly.

“ If your fellow Hebrew, a man or woman, is sold to you and serves you six years, you must set him free in the seventh year.When you set him free, do not send him away empty-handed.Give generously to him from your flock, your threshing floor, and your winepress. You are to give him whatever the LORD your God has blessed you with.

All nations will serve him, his son, and his grandson until the time for his own land comes, and then many nations and great kings will enslave him.

‘ At the end of seven years, each of you must let his fellow Hebrew who sold himself to you go. He may serve you six years, but then you must let him go free from your service.’ But your ancestors did not obey me or pay any attention.

On that day— this is the declaration of the LORD of Armies— I will break his yoke from your neck and tear off your chains, and strangers will never again enslave him.

But if this happens after sunrise, the householder is guilty of bloodshed. A thief must make full restitution. If he is unable, he is to be sold because of his theft.

and made their lives bitter with difficult labor in brick and mortar and in all kinds of fieldwork. They ruthlessly imposed all this work on them.

For many nations and great kings will enslave them, and I will repay them according to their deeds and the work of their hands.’”
