“ Whom have you mocked and reviled? Against whom have you raised your voice and lifted your eyes to the heights? Against the Holy One of Israel!

And great hailstones, about one hundred pounds each, fell from heaven on people; and they cursed God for the plague of the hail, because the plague was so severe.

For, as it is written,“ The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.”

Nevertheless, because by this deed you have utterly scorned the Lord, the child who is born to you shall die.”

Arise, O God, defend your cause; remember how the foolish scoff at you all the day!

And set two worthless men opposite him, and let them bring a charge against him, saying,‘ You have cursed God and the king.’ Then take him out and stone him to death.”

Then his wife said to him,“ Do you still hold fast your integrity? Curse God and die.”But he said to her,“ You speak as one of the foolish women would speak. Shall we receive good from God, and shall we not receive evil?” In all this Job did not sin with his lips.

And when the days of the feast had run their course, Job would send and consecrate them, and he would rise early in the morning and offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all. Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the secretary, and Joah the son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn and told him the words of the Rabshakeh.As soon as King Hezekiah heard it, he tore his clothes and covered himself with sackcloth and went into the house of the Lord.And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the secretary, and the senior priests, covered with sackcloth, to the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz.They said to him,“ Thus says Hezekiah, This day is a day of distress, of rebuke, and of disgrace; children have come to the point of birth, and there is no strength to bring them forth.

Who among all the gods of those nations that my fathers devoted to destruction was able to deliver his people from my hand, that your God should be able to deliver you from my hand?Now, therefore, do not let Hezekiah deceive you or mislead you in this fashion, and do not believe him, for no god of any nation or kingdom has been able to deliver his people from my hand or from the hand of my fathers. How much less will your God deliver you out of my hand!’”And his servants said still more against the Lord God and against his servant Hezekiah.And he wrote letters to cast contempt on the Lord, the God of Israel, and to speak against him, saying,“ Like the gods of the nations of the lands who have not delivered their people from my hands, so the God of Hezekiah will not deliver his people from my hand.”

Then the high priest tore his robes and said,“ He has uttered blasphemy. What further witnesses do we need? You have now heard his blasphemy.

though formerly I was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief,

And those who found him gathering sticks brought him to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation.They put him in custody, because it had not been made clear what should be done to him.And the Lord said to Moses,“ The man shall be put to death; all the congregation shall stone him with stones outside the camp.”

Do not let Hezekiah make you trust in the Lord by saying, The Lord will surely deliver us, and this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.’

Remember this, O Lord, how the enemy scoffs, and a foolish people reviles your name.
