“ Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls.For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

It is a Sabbath of solemn rest to you, and you shall afflict your souls. It is a statute forever.

But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth. I afflicted my soul with fasting. My prayer returned into my own bosom.

“ However on the tenth day of this seventh month is the day of atonement. It shall be a holy convocation to you. You shall afflict yourselves and you shall offer an offering made by fire to Yahweh.

to provide for those who mourn in Zion, to give to them a garland for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness, that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of Yahweh, that he may be glorified.

When I wept and I fasted, that was to my reproach.When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a byword to them.

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit. O God, you will not despise a broken and contrite heart.

For if we discerned ourselves, we wouldn’t be judged.

Those who sow in tears will reap in joy.He who goes out weeping, carrying seed for sowing, will certainly come again with joy, carrying his sheaves.

‘ Why have we fasted,’ they say,‘ and you don’t see? Why have we afflicted our soul, and you don’t notice?’“ Behold, in the day of your fast you find pleasure, and oppress all your laborers.Behold, you fast for strife and contention, and to strike with the fist of wickedness. You don’t fast today so as to make your voice to be heard on high.Is this the fast that I have chosen? A day for a man to humble his soul? Is it to bow down his head like a reed, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under himself? Will you call this a fast, and an acceptable day to Yahweh?“ Isn’t this the fast that I have chosen: to release the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke?Isn’t it to distribute your bread to the hungry, and that you bring the poor who are cast out to your house? When you see the naked, that you cover him; and that you not hide yourself from your own flesh?

Let’s therefore give diligence to enter into that rest, lest anyone fall after the same example of disobedience.

For we who have believed do enter into that rest, even as he has said,“ As I swore in my wrath, they will not enter into my rest;” although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

For the high and lofty One who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy, says:“ I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also who is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite.

I have seen his ways, and will heal him. I will lead him also, and restore comforts to him and to his mourners.I create the fruit of the lips: Peace, peace, to him who is far off and to him who is near,” says Yahweh;“ and I will heal them.”

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
