It is a day of sabbath rest for you, and you must deny yourselves. From the evening of the ninth day of the month until the following evening you are to observe your sabbath.”

Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy.Those who go out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with them. (niv)

‘ Why have we fasted,’ they say,‘ and you have not seen it? Why have we humbled ourselves, and you have not noticed?’“ Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please and exploit all your workers.Your fasting ends in quarreling and strife, and in striking each other with wicked fists. You cannot fast as you do today and expect your voice to be heard on high.Is this the kind of fast I have chosen, only a day for people to humble themselves? Is it only for bowing one’s head like a reed and for lying in sackcloth and ashes? Is that what you call a fast, a day acceptable to the Lord?“ Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke?Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter— when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience. (niv)

Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said,“ So I declared on oath in my anger,‘ They shall never enter my rest.’” And yet his works have been finished since the creation of the world. (niv)

For this is what the high and exalted One says— he who lives forever, whose name is holy:“ I live in a high and holy place, but also with the one who is contrite and lowly in spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite. (niv)

I have seen their ways, but I will heal them; I will guide them and restore comfort to Israel’s mourners,creating praise on their lips. Peace, peace, to those far and near,” says the Lord.“ And I will heal them.” (niv)

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. (niv)
