耶和華以色列的神曾經立了鹽約，要把以色列國永遠賜給大衛和他的子孫，你們不知道嗎？

你們的話要常常溫和，好像是用鹽調和的，使你們知道應當怎樣回答各人。

“你們是地上的鹽；如果鹽失了味，怎能使它再鹹呢？結果毫無用處，唯有丟在外面任人踐踏。

每一個人必被火當鹽來醃。（有些抄本在此有“各祭物必用鹽來醃”一句；也有些抄本只有附註的一句，而沒有正文的一句）鹽是好的，但如果失了味，可以用甚麼使它再鹹呢？你們自己裡面應當有鹽，彼此和睦。”

他可以要銀子三千四百公斤，麥子一百公斤，酒二千二百公升，油二千二百公升，鹽卻不受限制。
