Rejoice and be glad, Daughter Edom, you who live in the land of Uz. But to you also the cup will be passed; you will be drunk and stripped naked.

People of Edom, be joyful. You who live in the land of Uz, be glad. But the cup of the Lord’ s anger will also be passed to you. Then you will become drunk. Your clothes will be stripped off.

Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom, you who dwell in the land of Uz; but to you also the cup shall pass; you shall become drunk and strip yourself bare.

Are you rejoicing in the land of Uz, O people of Edom? But you, too, must drink from the cup of the Lord’s anger. You, too, will be stripped naked in your drunkenness.

Rejoice and be joyful, daughter of Edom, Who lives in the land of Uz; But the cup will pass to you as well, You will become drunk and expose yourself.

Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom, You who dwell in the land of Uz! The cup shall also pass over to you And you shall become drunk and make yourself naked.

There was a man in the country of Uz named Job. He was a man of complete integrity, who feared God and turned away from evil.

“ Look, I am coming like a thief. Blessed is the one who is alert and remains clothed so that he may not go around naked and people see his shame.”

The LORD says: I will not relent from punishing Edom for three crimes, even four, because he pursued his brother with the sword. He stifled his compassion, his anger tore at him continually, and he harbored his rage incessantly.

Remember, LORD, what the Edomites said that day at Jerusalem:“ Destroy it! Destroy it down to its foundations!”

“ Son of man, because Tyre said about Jerusalem,‘ Aha! The gateway to the peoples is shattered. She has been turned over to me. I will be filled now that she lies in ruins,’

Say to it,‘ This is what the Lord GOD says: Look! I am against you, Mount Seir. I will stretch out my hand against you and make you a desolate waste.I will turn your cities into ruins, and you will become a desolation. Then you will know that I am the LORD.“‘ Because you maintained a perpetual hatred and gave the Israelites over to the power of the sword in the time of their disaster, the time of final punishment,therefore, as I live— this is the declaration of the Lord GOD— I will destine you for bloodshed, and it will pursue you. Since you did not hate bloodshed, it will pursue you.I will make Mount Seir a desolate waste and will cut off from it those who come and go.I will fill its mountains with the slain; those slain by the sword will fall on your hills, in your valleys, and in all your ravines.I will make you a perpetual desolation; your cities will not be inhabited. Then you will know that I am the LORD.

“‘ This is what the Lord GOD says: Because Moab and Seir said,“ Look, the house of Judah is like all the other nations.”

You nations, come here and listen; you peoples, pay attention! Let the earth and all that fills it hear, the world and all that comes from it.The LORD is angry with all the nations, furious with all their armies. He will set them apart for destruction, giving them over to slaughter.Their slain will be thrown out, and the stench of their corpses will rise; the mountains will flow with their blood.All the stars in the sky will dissolve. The sky will roll up like a scroll, and its stars will all wither as leaves wither on the vine, and foliage on the fig tree.When my sword has drunk its fill in the heavens, it will then come down on Edom and on the people I have set apart for destruction.The LORD’s sword is covered with blood. It drips with fat, with the blood of lambs and goats, with the fat of the kidneys of rams. For the LORD has a sacrifice in Bozrah, a great slaughter in the land of Edom.The wild oxen will be struck down with them, and young bulls with the mighty bulls. Their land will be soaked with blood, and their soil will be saturated with fat.For the LORD has a day of vengeance, a time of paying back Edom for its hostility against Zion.Edom’s streams will be turned into pitch, her soil into sulfur; her land will become burning pitch.It will never go out— day or night. Its smoke will go up forever. It will be desolate, from generation to generation; no one will pass through it forever and ever.Eagle owls and herons will possess it, and long-eared owls and ravens will dwell there. The LORD will stretch out a measuring line and a plumb line over her for her destruction and chaos.No nobles will be left to proclaim a king, and all her princes will come to nothing.Her palaces will be overgrown with thorns; her fortified cities, with thistles and briers. She will become a dwelling for jackals, an abode for ostriches.The desert creatures will meet hyenas, and one wild goat will call to another. Indeed, the night birds will stay there and will find a resting place.Sand partridges will make their nests there; they will lay and hatch their eggs and will gather their broods under their shadows. Indeed, the birds of prey will gather there, each with its mate.Search and read the scroll of the LORD: Not one of them will be missing, none will be lacking its mate, because he has ordered it by my mouth, and he will gather them by his Spirit.He has cast the lot for them; his hand allotted their portion with a measuring line. They will possess it forever; they will dwell in it from generation to generation.

You will be covered with shame and destroyed forever because of violence done to your brother Jacob.On the day you stood aloof, on the day strangers captured his wealth, while foreigners entered his city gate and cast lots for Jerusalem, you were just like one of them.Do not gloat over your brother in the day of his calamity; do not rejoice over the people of Judah in the day of their destruction; do not boastfully mock in the day of distress.Do not enter my people’s city gate in the day of their disaster. Yes, you— do not gloat over their misery in the day of their disaster, and do not appropriate their possessions in the day of their disaster.Do not stand at the crossroads to cut off their fugitives, and do not hand over their survivors in the day of distress.For the day of the LORD is near, against all the nations. As you have done, it will be done to you; what you deserve will return on your own head.As you have drunk on my holy mountain, so all the nations will drink continually. They will drink and gulp down and be as though they had never been.

They devise clever schemes against your people; they conspire against your treasured ones.They say,“ Come, let’s wipe them out as a nation so that Israel’s name will no longer be remembered.”For they have conspired with one mind; they form an alliance against you—the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites, Moab and the Hagrites,Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek, Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre.Even Assyria has joined them; they lend support to the sons of Lot. SelahDeal with them as you did with Midian, as you did with Sisera and Jabin at the Kishon River.They were destroyed at En-dor; they became manure for the ground.Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb, and all their tribal leaders like Zebah and Zalmunna,who said,“ Let’s seize God’s pastures for ourselves.”

The vision of Obadiah. This is what the Lord GOD has said about Edom: We have heard a message from the LORD; an envoy has been sent among the nations:“ Rise up, and let’s go to war against her.”

therefore, as I live— this is the declaration of the Lord GOD— I will treat you according to the anger and jealousy you showed in your hatred of them. I will make myself known among them when I judge you.Then you will know that I, the LORD, have heard all the blasphemies you uttered against the mountains of Israel, saying,“ They are desolate. They have been given to us to devour!”You boasted against me with your mouth, and spoke many words against me. I heard it myself!“‘ This is what the Lord GOD says: While the whole world rejoices, I will make you a desolation.Just as you rejoiced over the inheritance of the house of Israel because it became a desolation, I will deal the same way with you: you will become a desolation, Mount Seir, and so will all Edom in its entirety. Then they will know that I am the LORD.’

“‘ For this is what the Lord GOD says: Because you clapped your hands, stamped your feet, and rejoiced over the land of Israel with wholehearted contempt,

For the LORD humbled Judah because of King Ahaz of Judah, who threw off restraint in Judah and was unfaithful to the LORD.

“‘ This is what the Lord GOD says: Because Edom acted vengefully against the house of Judah and incurred grievous guilt by taking revenge on them,therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: I will stretch out my hand against Edom and cut off both people and animals from it. I will make it a wasteland; they will fall by the sword from Teman to Dedan.I will take my vengeance on Edom through my people Israel, and they will deal with Edom according to my anger and wrath. So they will know my vengeance. This is the declaration of the Lord GOD.

For this is what the LORD says:“ If those who do not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, can you possibly remain unpunished? You will not remain unpunished, for you must drink it too.

Depart in shameful nakedness, you residents of Shaphir; the residents of Zaanan will not come out. Beth-ezel is lamenting; its support is taken from you.

Who is this coming from Edom in crimson-stained garments from Bozrah— this one who is splendid in his apparel, striding in his formidable might? It is I, proclaiming vindication, powerful to save.Why are your clothes red, and your garments like one who treads a winepress?I trampled the winepress alone, and no one from the nations was with me. I trampled them in my anger and ground them underfoot in my fury; their blood spattered my garments, and all my clothes were stained.For I planned the day of vengeance, and the year of my redemption came.I looked, but there was no one to help, and I was amazed that no one assisted; so my arm accomplished victory for me, and my wrath assisted me.I crushed nations in my anger; I made them drunk with my wrath and poured out their blood on the ground.

Rejoice, young person, while you are young, and let your heart be glad in the days of your youth. And walk in the ways of your heart and in the desire of your eyes; but know that for all of these things God will bring you to judgment.

This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, said to me:“ Take this cup of the wine of wrath from my hand and make all the nations to whom I am sending you drink from it.They will drink, stagger, and go out of their minds because of the sword I am sending among them.”So I took the cup from the LORD’s hand and made all the nations to whom the LORD sent me drink from it.Jerusalem and the other cities of Judah, its kings and its officials, to make them a desolate ruin, an example for scorn and cursing— as it is today;Pharaoh king of Egypt, his officers, his leaders, all his people,and all the mixed peoples; all the kings of the land of Uz; all the kings of the land of the Philistines— Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod;Edom, Moab, and the Ammonites;all the kings of Tyre, all the kings of Sidon, and the kings of the coasts and islands;Dedan, Tema, Buz, and all those who clip the hair on their temples;all the kings of Arabia, and all the kings of the mixed peoples who have settled in the desert;all the kings of Zimri, all the kings of Elam, and all the kings of Media;all the kings of the north, both near and far from one another; that is, all the kingdoms of the world throughout the earth. Finally, the king of Sheshak will drink after them.“ Then you are to say to them,‘ This is what the LORD of Armies, the God of Israel, says: Drink, get drunk, and vomit. Fall down and never get up again, as a result of the sword I am sending among you.’If they refuse to accept the cup from your hand and drink, you are to say to them,‘ This is what the LORD of Armies says: You must drink!For I am already bringing disaster on the city that bears my name, so how could you possibly go unpunished? You will not go unpunished, for I am summoning a sword against all the inhabitants of the earth. This is the declaration of the LORD of Armies.’

“ I have loved you,” says the LORD. Yet you ask,“ How have you loved us?”“ Wasn’t Esau Jacob’s brother?” This is the LORD’s declaration.“ Even so, I loved Jacob,but I hated Esau. I turned his mountains into a wasteland, and gave his inheritance to the desert jackals.”Though Edom says,“ We have been devastated, but we will rebuild the ruins,” the LORD of Armies says this:“ They may build, but I will demolish. They will be called a wicked country and the people the LORD has cursed forever.
