Our king— the Lord’s anointed, the very life of our nation— was caught in their snares. We had thought that his shadow would protect us against any nation on earth!

主所沐以膏、我所視如鼻孔生氣、素望蒙其蔭庇、可存於列邦者、竟陷於敵之坑阱、

The Lord’s anointed, our very life breath, was caught in their traps. We thought that under his shadow we would live among the nations.

Zedekiah, the Lord’ s anointed king, was our last hope. But he was caught in their traps. We thought he would keep us safe. We expected to continue living among the nations.

The breath of our nostrils, the Lord’s anointed, was captured in their pits, of whom we said,“ Under his shadow we shall live among the nations.”

But the Babylonian troops chased them and overtook Zedekiah on the plains of Jericho. They captured him and took him to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, who was at Riblah in the land of Hamath. There the king of Babylon pronounced judgment upon Zedekiah.

Then I will throw my net over him and capture him in my snare. I will bring him to Babylon, the land of the Babylonians, though he will never see it, and he will die there.

Then Abishai son of Zeruiah said,“ Shimei should die, for he cursed the Lord’s anointed king!”

Jerusalem’s gates have sunk into the ground. He has smashed their locks and bars. Her kings and princes have been exiled to distant lands; her law has ceased to exist. Her prophets receive no more visions from the Lord.

“ Why were you not afraid to kill the Lord’s anointed one?” David asked.

This very day you can see with your own eyes it isn’t true. For the Lord placed you at my mercy back there in the cave. Some of my men told me to kill you, but I spared you. For I said,‘ I will never harm the king— he is the Lord’s anointed one.’

When they arrived, Samuel took one look at Eliab and thought,“ Surely this is the Lord’s anointed!”

“ And now, my lord, I cannot go back to my father without the boy. Our father’s life is bound up in the boy’s life.

Then the nations heard about him, and he was trapped in their pit. They led him away with hooks to the land of Egypt.“ When the lioness saw that her hopes for him were gone, she took another of her cubs and taught him to be a strong young lion.He prowled among the other lions and stood out among them in his strength. He learned to hunt and devour prey, and he, too, became a man eater.He demolished fortresses and destroyed their towns and cities. Their farms were desolated, and their crops were destroyed. The land and its people trembled in fear when they heard him roar.Then the armies of the nations attacked him, surrounding him from every direction. They threw a net over him and captured him in their pit.

He said to his men,“ The Lord forbid that I should do this to my lord the king. I shouldn’t attack the Lord’s anointed one, for the Lord himself has chosen him.”

For the king of Israel disregarded his treaty and broke it after swearing to obey; therefore, he will not escape.
