The Lord deserted his altar. He left his temple. He gave the walls of Jerusalem’s palaces into the hands of her enemies. They shouted loudly in the house of the Lord. You would have thought it was the day of an appointed feast.

The Lord has rejected his altar and abandoned his sanctuary. He has given the walls of her palaces into the hands of the enemy; they have raised a shout in the house of the Lord as on the day of an appointed festival.

The Lord has scorned his altar, disowned his sanctuary; he has delivered into the hand of the enemy the walls of her palaces; they raised a clamor in the house of the Lord as on the day of festival.

The Lord has rejected his own altar; he despises his own sanctuary. He has given Jerusalem’s palaces to her enemies. They shout in the Lord’s Temple as though it were a day of celebration.

Walk through this place that has been torn down beyond repair. See how completely your enemies have destroyed the temple!In the place where you used to meet with us, your enemies have shouted,“ We’ve won the battle!” They have set up their flags to show they have beaten us.They acted like people cutting down a forest with axes.They smashed all the beautiful wooden walls with their axes and hatchets.They burned your temple to the ground. They polluted the place where your Name is.They had said in their hearts,“ We will crush them completely!” They burned every place where you were worshiped in the land.

When God saw what the people were doing, he was very angry. He turned away from them completely.He deserted the holy tent at Shiloh. He left the tent he had set up among his people.He allowed the ark to be captured. Into the hands of his enemies he sent the ark where his glory rested.

‘ Speak to the people of Israel. Tell them,“ The Lord and King says,‘ I am about to make my temple“ unclean.” I will let the Babylonians burn it down. It is the beautiful building you are so proud of. You take delight in it. You love it. The sons and daughters you left behind will be killed by swords.

My people were so proud of their beautiful jewelry. They used it to make statues of their evil gods. I hate those gods. So I will turn their jewelry into an“ unclean” thing for them.“‘ I will hand over their wealth to outsiders. I will turn it over to sinful people in other countries. They will make it“ unclean.”I will turn my face away from my people. Robbers will make“ unclean” the temple I love. They will enter it and make it“ unclean.”

Nebuzaradan set the Lord’ s temple on fire. He also set fire to the royal palace and all the houses in Jerusalem. He burned down every important building.

The armies of Babylon are now attacking this city. They will come in and set it on fire. They will burn it down. They will burn down the houses where the people made me very angry. They burned incense on their roofs to the god named Baal. And they poured out drink offerings to other gods.

“ Micah from Moresheth prophesied. It was during the time Hezekiah was king over Judah. Micah spoke to all the people of Judah. He told them,‘ The Lord who rules over all says,“‘ “Zion will be plowed up like a field. Jerusalem will be turned into a pile of trash. The temple hill will be covered with bushes and weeds.” ’( Micah 3:12)

The Babylonians set the royal palace on fire. They also set fire to the houses of the people. And they broke down the walls of Jerusalem.

The Lord was like an enemy. He swallowed up Israel. He swallowed up all of its palaces. He destroyed its forts. He filled the people of Judah with sorrow and sadness.

I will completely destroy your cities. I will destroy your places of worship. The pleasant smell of your offerings will not give me any delight.

So I will send fire to destroy Judah. It will burn up Jerusalem’s forts.”

So because of what you have done, Zion will be plowed up like a field. Jerusalem will be turned into a pile of trash. The temple hill will be covered with bushes and weeds.

But even after all that, I will not say no to you or turn away from you. I will not destroy you completely in the land of your enemies. I will not break my covenant with you. I am the Lord your God.

They found witnesses who were willing to tell lies. These liars said,“ This fellow never stops speaking against this holy place. He also speaks against the law.We have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place. He says Jesus will change the practices that Moses handed down to us.”

“ Do you see all these things?” Jesus asked.“ What I’m about to tell you is true. Not one stone here will be left on top of another. Every stone will be thrown down.”

The Babylonians set God’s temple on fire. They broke down the wall of Jerusalem. They burned all the palaces. They destroyed everything of value there.

May the king stand up for those who are hurting. May he save the children of those who are in need. May he crush those who treat others badly.May the king rule as long as the sun shines and the moon gives its light. May he rule for all time to come.May he be like rain falling on the fields. May he be like showers watering the earth.May godly people do well as long as he rules. May they have more than they need as long as the moon lasts.May the king rule from sea to sea. May his kingdom reach from the Euphrates River to the ends of the earth.May the desert tribes bow down to him. May his enemies lick the dust.May the kings of Tarshish and of places far away bring him gifts. May the kings of Sheba and Seba give him presents.May all kings bow down to him. May all nations serve him.The king will save needy people who cry out to him. He will save those who are hurting and have no one else to help.He will take pity on those who are weak and in need. He will save them from death.He will save them from people who treat others badly. He will save them from people who do mean things to them. Their lives are very special to him.May the king live a long time! May gold from Sheba be given to him. May people always pray for him. May they ask the Lord to bless him all day long.May there be plenty of grain everywhere in the land. May it sway in the wind on the tops of the hills. May the crops grow well, like those in Lebanon. May they grow like the grass of the field.May the king’s name be remembered forever. May his fame last as long as the sun shines. Then all nations will be blessed because of him. They will call him blessed.Give praise to the Lord God, the God of Israel. Only he can do wonderful things.Give praise to his glorious name forever. May his glory fill the whole earth. Your sacred cities have become a desert. Even Zion is a desert. Jerusalem is a dry and empty place.Our people of long ago used to praise you in our holy and glorious temple. But now it has been burned down. Everything we treasured has been destroyed.

“‘ “Go now to the town of Shiloh. Go to the place where I first made a home for my Name. See what I did to it because of the evil things my people Israel were doing.I spoke to you again and again,” announces the Lord.“ I warned you while you were doing all these things. But you did not listen. I called out to you. But you did not answer.So what I did to Shiloh I will now do to the house where my Name is. It is the temple you trust in. It is the place I gave to you and your people of long ago.

So I will make this house like Shiloh. All the nations on earth will use the name of this city in a curse.” ’ ”

See how the Lord covered the city of Zion with the cloud of his anger! He threw Israel’s glory down from heaven to earth. When he was angry, he turned his back on his own city.

I will bring the most evil nations against them. They will take over the houses in the city. I will put an end to the pride of those who are mighty. Their holy places will be made“ unclean.”

Call out to me. I will answer you. I will tell you great things you do not know. And unless I do, you wouldn’t be able to find out about them.”The Lord is the God of Israel. He speaks about the houses in Jerusalem. He talks about the royal palaces of Judah. The people had torn down many of them. They had used their stones to strengthen the city walls against attack.That was during their fight with the armies of Babylon. The Lord says,“ The houses will be filled with dead bodies. They will be the bodies of the people I will kill. I will kill them when I am very angry with them. I will hide my face from this city. That’s because its people have committed so many sins.
