Woe to them! For they have traveled down Cain’s path, and because of greed have abandoned themselves to Balaam’s error; hence, they will certainly perish in Korah’s rebellion.

禍哉斯人也、以其行該隱之途、且為利而趨巴蘭之謬、淪亡於可拉之違言、

彼行該隱之途、以其貪利、故謬則從巴蘭、逆則效哥喇、烏能弗敗、

彼眾禍矣、因行該隱之途、為利而從巴蘭之謬、效哥拉之逆、皆必淪亡、

哀哉此輩、既追踵該因、步其後塵；且以利忘身、而流入巴賴之歧途；又不惜與可拉並肩作亂、而自取滅亡也。

Woe to them! They have taken the way of Cain; they have rushed for profit into Balaam’s error; they have been destroyed in Korah’s rebellion.

How terrible it will be for them! They have followed the way of Cain. They have rushed into the same mistake Balaam made. They did it because they loved money. They are like Korah. He turned against his leaders. These people will certainly be destroyed, just as Korah was.

Woe to them! For they walked in the way of Cain and abandoned themselves for the sake of gain to Balaam’s error and perished in Korah’s rebellion.

What sorrow awaits them! For they follow in the footsteps of Cain, who killed his brother. Like Balaam, they deceive people for money. And like Korah, they perish in their rebellion.

Woe to them! For they have gone the way of Cain, have plunged into Balaam’s error for profit, and have perished in Korah’s rebellion.

Woe to them! For they have gone the way of Cain, and for pay they have given themselves up to the error of Balaam, and perished in the rebellion of Korah.

Woe to them! For they have gone in the way of Cain, have run greedily in the error of Balaam for profit, and perished in the rebellion of Korah.

Woe unto them! for they went in the way of Cain, and ran riotously in the error of Balaam for hire, and perished in the gainsaying of Korah.

Woe to them! For they have traveled in the way of Cain, have abandoned themselves to the error of Balaam for profit, and have perished in Korah’s rebellion.

Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core.

Woe to them! For they went in the way of Cain, and ran riotously in the error of Balaam for hire, and perished in Korah’s rebellion.

By forsaking the right path they have gone astray, because they followed the way of Balaam son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness,

At the designated time Cain brought some of the fruit of the ground for an offering to the LORD.But Abel brought some of the firstborn of his flock– even the fattest of them. And the LORD was pleased with Abel and his offering,but with Cain and his offering he was not pleased. So Cain became very angry, and his expression was downcast.Then the LORD said to Cain,“ Why are you angry, and why is your expression downcast?Is it not true that if you do what is right, you will be fine? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at the door. It desires to dominate you, but you must subdue it.”Cain said to his brother Abel,“ Let’s go out to the field.” While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.Then the LORD said to Cain,“ Where is your brother Abel?” And he replied,“ I don’t know! Am I my brother’s guardian?”But the LORD said,“ What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying out to me from the ground!So now, you are banished from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.When you try to cultivate the ground it will no longer yield its best for you. You will be a homeless wanderer on the earth.”Then Cain said to the LORD,“ My punishment is too great to endure!Look! You are driving me off the land today, and I must hide from your presence. I will be a homeless wanderer on the earth; whoever finds me will kill me.”

Eliab’s descendants were Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram. It was Dathan and Abiram who as leaders of the community rebelled against Moses and Aaron with the followers of Korah when they rebelled against the LORD.The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and Korah at the time that company died, when the fire consumed 250 men. So they became a warning.

But I have a few things against you: You have some people there who follow the teaching of Balaam, who instructed Balak to put a stumbling block before the people of Israel so they would eat food sacrificed to idols and commit sexual immorality.

The look on their faces testifies to their guilt; like the people of Sodom they openly boast of their sin. Too bad for them! For they bring disaster on themselves.

Now Korah son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth, who were Reubenites, took menand rebelled against Moses, along with some of the Israelites, 250 leaders of the community, chosen from the assembly, famous men.And they assembled against Moses and Aaron, saying to them,“ You take too much upon yourselves, seeing that the whole community is holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them. Why then do you exalt yourselves above the community of the LORD?”When Moses heard it he fell down with his face to the ground.Then he said to Korah and to all his company,“ In the morning the LORD will make known who are his, and who is holy. He will cause that person to approach him; the person he has chosen he will cause to approach him.Do this, Korah, you and all your company: Take censers,put fire in them, and set incense on them before the LORD tomorrow, and the man whom the LORD chooses will be holy. You take too much upon yourselves, you sons of Levi!”Moses said to Korah,“ Listen now, you sons of Levi!Does it seem too small a thing to you that the God of Israel has separated you from the community of Israel to bring you near to himself, to perform the service of the tabernacle of the LORD, and to stand before the community to minister to them?He has brought you near and all your brothers, the sons of Levi, with you. Do you now seek the priesthood also?Therefore you and all your company have assembled together against the LORD! And Aaron– what is he that you murmur against him?”Then Moses summoned Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, but they said,“ We will not come up.Is it a small thing that you have brought us up out of the land that flows with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness? Now do you want to make yourself a prince over us?Moreover, you have not brought us into a land that flows with milk and honey, nor given us an inheritance of fields and vineyards. Do you think you can blind these men? We will not come up.”Moses was very angry, and he said to the LORD,“ Have no respect for their offering! I have not taken so much as one donkey from them, nor have I harmed any one of them!”Then Moses said to Korah,“ You and all your company present yourselves before the LORD– you and they, and Aaron– tomorrow.And each of you take his censer, put incense in it, and then each of you present his censer before the LORD: 250 censers, along with you, and Aaron– each of you with his censer.”So everyone took his censer, put fire in it, and set incense on it, and stood at the entrance of the tent of meeting, with Moses and Aaron.When Korah assembled the whole community against them at the entrance of the tent of meeting, then the glory of the LORD appeared to the whole community.The LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron:“ Separate yourselves from among this community, that I may consume them in an instant.”Then they threw themselves down with their faces to the ground and said,“ O God, the God of the spirits of all people, will you be angry with the whole community when only one man sins?”So the LORD spoke to Moses:“ Tell the community:‘ Get away from around the homes of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.’”Then Moses got up and went to Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel went after him.And he said to the community,“ Move away from the tents of these wicked men, and do not touch anything they have, lest you be destroyed because of all their sins.”So they got away from the homes of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram on every side, and Dathan and Abiram came out and stationed themselves in the entrances of their tents with their wives, their children, and their toddlers.Then Moses said,“ This is how you will know that the LORD has sent me to do all these works, for I have not done them of my own will.If these men die a natural death, or if they share the fate of all men, then the LORD has not sent me.But if the LORD does something entirely new, and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them up along with all that they have, and they go down alive to the grave, then you will know that these men have despised the LORD!”When he had finished speaking all these words, the ground that was under them split open,and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, along with their households, and all Korah’s men, and all their goods.They and all that they had went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed over them. So they perished from among the community.All the Israelites who were around them fled at their cry, for they said,“ What if the earth swallows us too?”Then a fire went out from the LORD and devoured the 250 men who offered incense.

By faith Abel offered God a greater sacrifice than Cain, and through his faith he was commended as righteous, because God commended him for his offerings. And through his faith he still speaks, though he is dead.

This is what the sovereign LORD says: Woe to the foolish prophets who follow their own spirit but have seen nothing!

Too bad for the wicked sinners! For they will get exactly what they deserve.

My people, recall how King Balak of Moab planned to harm you, how Balaam son of Beor responded to him. Recall how you journeyed from Shittim to Gilgal, so you might acknowledge that the LORD has treated you fairly.”

“ But woe to you Pharisees! You give a tenth of your mint, rue, and every herb, yet you neglect justice and love for God! But you should have done these things without neglecting the others.Woe to you Pharisees! You love the best seats in the synagogues and elaborate greetings in the marketplaces!Woe to you! You are like unmarked graves, and people walk over them without realizing it!”One of the experts in religious law answered him,“ Teacher, when you say these things you insult us too.”But Jesus replied,“ Woe to you experts in religious law as well! You load people down with burdens difficult to bear, yet you yourselves refuse to touch the burdens with even one of your fingers!Woe to you! You build the tombs of the prophets whom your ancestors killed.

for they did not meet you with food and water on the way as you came from Egypt, and furthermore, they hired Balaam son of Beor of Pethor in Aram Naharaim to curse you.

Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, launched an attack against Israel. He summoned Balaam son of Beor to call down judgment on you.I refused to respond to Balaam; he kept prophesying good things about you, and I rescued you from his power.You crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho. The leaders of Jericho, as well as the Amorites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hittites, Girgashites, Hivites, and Jebusites, fought with you, but I handed them over to you.

People of Jerusalem, I have seen your adulterous worship, your shameless prostitution to, and your lustful pursuit of, other gods. I have seen your disgusting acts of worship on the hills throughout the countryside. You are doomed to destruction! How long will you continue to be unclean?’”

“ Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! If the miracles done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

Woe to the worthless shepherd who abandons the flock! May a sword fall on his arm and his right eye! May his arm wither completely away, and his right eye become completely blind!”

Look, these people through the counsel of Balaam caused the Israelites to act treacherously against the LORD in the matter of Peor– which resulted in the plague among the community of the LORD!

“ But woe to you, experts in the law and you Pharisees, hypocrites! You keep locking people out of the kingdom of heaven! For you neither enter nor permit those trying to enter to go in.

The Israelites traveled on and camped in the plains of Moab on the side of the Jordan River across from Jericho.Balak son of Zippor saw all that the Israelites had done to the Amorites.And the Moabites were greatly afraid of the people, because they were so numerous. The Moabites were sick with fear because of the Israelites.So the Moabites said to the elders of Midian,“ Now this mass of people will lick up everything around us, as the bull devours the grass of the field. Now Balak son of Zippor was king of the Moabites at this time.And he sent messengers to Balaam son of Beor at Pethor, which is by the Euphrates River in the land of Amaw, to summon him, saying,“ Look, a nation has come out of Egypt. They cover the face of the earth, and they are settling next to me.So now, please come and curse this nation for me, for they are too powerful for me. Perhaps I will prevail so that we may conquer them and drive them out of the land. For I know that whoever you bless is blessed, and whoever you curse is cursed.”So the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the fee for divination in their hand. They came to Balaam and reported to him the words of Balak.He replied to them,“ Stay here tonight, and I will bring back to you whatever word the LORD may speak to me.” So the princes of Moab stayed with Balaam.And God came to Balaam and said,“ Who are these men with you?”Balaam said to God,“ Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, has sent a message to me, saying,“ Look, a nation has come out of Egypt, and it covers the face of the earth. Come now and put a curse on them for me; perhaps I will be able to defeat them and drive them out.”But God said to Balaam,“ You must not go with them; you must not curse the people, for they are blessed.”So Balaam got up in the morning, and said to the princes of Balak,“ Go to your land, for the LORD has refused to permit me to go with you.”So the princes of Moab departed and went back to Balak and said,“ Balaam refused to come with us.”Balak again sent princes, more numerous and more distinguished than the first.And they came to Balaam and said to him,“ Thus says Balak son of Zippor:‘ Please do not let anything hinder you from coming to me.For I will honor you greatly, and whatever you tell me I will do. So come, put a curse on this nation for me.’”Balaam replied to the servants of Balak,“ Even if Balak would give me his palace full of silver and gold, I could not transgress the commandment of the LORD my God to do less or more.Now therefore, please stay the night here also, that I may know what more the LORD might say to me.”God came to Balaam that night, and said to him,“ If the men have come to call you, get up and go with them; but the word that I will say to you, that you must do.”So Balaam got up in the morning, saddled his donkey, and went with the princes of Moab.Then God’s anger was kindled because he went, and the angel of the LORD stood in the road to oppose him. Now he was riding on his donkey and his two servants were with him.And the donkey saw the angel of the LORD standing in the road with his sword drawn in his hand, so the donkey turned aside from the road and went into the field. But Balaam beat the donkey, to make her turn back to the road.Then the angel of the LORD stood in a path among the vineyards, where there was a wall on either side.
