Then Joshua made a treaty of peace with them to let them live, and the leaders of the assembly ratified it by oath.

原來基遍人不是以色列人，他們是亞摩利人的遺民。以色列人曾起誓不傷害他們，但掃羅為以色列人和猶大人發熱心，試圖剷除基遍人。大衛就召來基遍人，

除了基遍的希未人以外，其他沒有一城向以色列人求和，以色列人全部攻佔了這些城。

我既然恩待了你們，現在請你們憑耶和華向我起誓，你們也照樣恩待我家，並且給我一個可靠的憑據，保證讓我的父母、兄弟、姐妹和他們所有的親人免於一死。」二人便對她說：「如果你不洩露我們的事，我們願意用性命擔保，當耶和華把這地方賜給我們的時候，我們一定守信善待你。」喇合的房子就在城牆邊，她就住在城牆上，於是她用繩子把二人從窗口縋下去，並對他們說：「你們往山上去，免得被追捕的人發現。你們要在那裡躲三天，等追捕的人回城以後才可以走。」二人對她說：「要讓我們信守誓言，你必須這樣做，我們來攻佔這座城的時候，你要把這條朱紅色的繩子繫在縋我們下去的窗戶上，並且把你的父母、兄弟、姊妹和他們的親人都召集到你家裡。倘若有人因離開這房子跑到街上而遭遇不測，我們不負任何責任。我們一定保證屋內所有人的性命安全。

約書亞對那兩個探子說：「你們到那個妓女家裡，照著你們向她起過的誓，把她和她的家人都帶出來。」於是，那兩個年輕探子便進去，把喇合和她的父母、兄弟及所有的親人都帶出來，安置在以色列人的營外。以色列人燒毀全城和城內一切的東西，只把金銀和銅鐵器皿放在耶和華的庫房裡。約書亞因為妓女喇合把兩個探子隱藏起來，就饒了她和她一家人的性命。他們至今仍住在以色列人當中。

不可跟這些民族及其神明立約，

當我宣佈要剷除、推翻、毀滅哪一邦或哪一國的時候，如果他們悔過自新，我必施憐憫，取消我原本要降給他們的災禍。

「你們進攻一座城之前，要先給城中居民求和的機會。如果他們開城投降，城裡所有的人都要做你們的奴隸，為你們服勞役。
