Then the men in ambush rose quickly from their place, and when he had reached out with his hand, they ran and entered the city and captured it, and they quickly set the city on fire.

So Israel set men in ambush around Gibeah.And the sons of Israel went up against the sons of Benjamin on the third day and lined up against Gibeah as at other times.When the sons of Benjamin went out against the people, they were lured away from the city, and they began to strike and kill some of the people as at other times, on the roads( one of which goes up to Bethel, and the other to Gibeah), and in the field, about thirty men of Israel.And the sons of Benjamin said,“ They are defeated before us, like the first time.” But the sons of Israel said,“ Let’s flee, so that we may draw them away from the city to the roads.”Then all the men of Israel rose from their place and lined up at Baal tamar; and the men of Israel in ambush charged from their place, from Maareh geba.

But the Lord said to me,‘ Do not fear him, for I have handed him and all his people and his land over to you; and you shall do to him just as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon.’

So Joshua sent them away, and they went to the place of ambush and remained between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of Ai; but Joshua spent that night among the people.

Now when Israel had finished killing all the inhabitants of Ai in the field in the wilderness where they pursued them, and all of them had fallen by the edge of the sword until they were destroyed, then all Israel returned to Ai and struck it with the edge of the sword.
