And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten.

And that day Joshua took Makkedah, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof he utterly destroyed, them, and all the souls that[ were] therein; he let none remain: and he did to the king of Makkedah as he did unto the king of Jericho.

Then ye shall rise up from the ambush, and seize upon the city: for the LORD your God will deliver it into your hand.

Only the cattle and the spoil of that city Israel took for a prey unto themselves, according unto the word of the LORD which he commanded Joshua.And Joshua burnt Ai, and made it an heap for ever,[ even] a desolation unto this day.And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree until eventide: and as soon as the sun was down, Joshua commanded that they should take his carcase down from the tree, and cast it at the entering of the gate of the city, and raise thereon a great heap of stones,[ that remaineth] unto this day.

And the ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand: and they entered into the city, and took it, and hasted and set the city on fire.

[ As] the partridge sitteth[ on eggs], and hatcheth[ them] not;[ so] he that getteth riches, and not by right, shall leave them in the midst of his days, and at his end shall be a fool.

And Israel set liers in wait round about Gibeah.And the children of Israel went up against the children of Benjamin on the third day, and put themselves in array against Gibeah, as at other times.And the children of Benjamin went out against the people,[ and] were drawn away from the city; and they began to smite of the people,[ and] kill, as at other times, in the highways, of which one goeth up to the house of God, and the other to Gibeah in the field, about thirty men of Israel.And the children of Benjamin said, They[ are] smitten down before us, as at the first. But the children of Israel said, Let us flee, and draw them from the city unto the highways.And all the men of Israel rose up out of their place, and put themselves in array at Baaltamar: and the liers in wait of Israel came forth out of their places,[ even] out of the meadows of Gibeah.

And the LORD said unto me, Fear him not: for I will deliver him, and all his people, and his land, into thy hand; and thou shalt do unto him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, which dwelt at Heshbon.

Joshua therefore sent them forth: and they went to lie in ambush, and abode between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of Ai: but Joshua lodged that night among the people.

And it came to pass, when Israel had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness wherein they chased them, and when they were all fallen on the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that all the Israelites returned unto Ai, and smote it with the edge of the sword.
