Now Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is near Beth Aven to the east of Bethel, and told them,“ Go up and spy out the region.” So the men went up and spied out Ai.

以色列啊！你雖然行淫，猶大卻不可犯罪，不要往吉甲去，不要上到伯．亞文，也不要指著永活的耶和華起誓。

非利士人聚集起來，要與以色列人交戰，他們有戰車三千（“三千”原文作“三萬”，這裡參考一些《七十士譯本》的文本及敍利亞譯本翻譯）輛、騎兵六千人、步兵像海邊的沙那麼多。他們上來，在伯．亞文東邊的密抹安營。

那一天，耶和華拯救了以色列人。戰爭伸展到伯．亞文。

你要憑著智謀去作戰；謀士眾多，就可得勝。

計劃要有籌算才能確立；作戰也要倚靠智謀。

後來他從那裡遷到伯特利東邊的山地，搭起帳棚。西邊是伯特利，東邊是艾城；他在那裡也為耶和華築了一座祭壇，呼求耶和華的名。

“現在，我差派你們出去，好像羊進到狼群中間；所以你們要像蛇一樣機警，像鴿子一樣純潔。

有些便雅憫人住在迦巴、密抹、亞雅、伯特利和屬於伯特利的鄉村，

他就給那地方起名叫伯特利，但那城起初名叫路斯。

他們的王，一個是耶利哥王，一個是伯特利旁邊的艾城王，

所以，你們行事為人要謹慎，不要像愚昧人，卻要像聰明人。

於是，嫩的兒子約書亞從什亭祕密地差派兩個探子，對他們說：“你們去窺探那地，尤其是耶利哥。”二人去了，來到一個名叫喇合的妓女家中，就在那裡住宿。
