Now this is why he did so: All those who came out of Egypt— all the men of military age— died in the wilderness on the way after leaving Egypt.

尽管如此，他们当中大多数人不讨上帝的喜悦，倒毙在旷野。

“所有的战士都死后，

其中没有一个是摩西和祭司亚伦从前在西奈旷野登记的人。因为耶和华说过，那批人都要死在旷野。果然，除了耶孚尼的儿子迦勒和嫩的儿子约书亚以外，上次登记的人无一存活。

我们从离开加低斯·巴尼亚到穿过撒烈溪用了三十八年。期间，那一代战士都死光了，正如耶和华的誓言。

他们绝对看不到我起誓要赐给他们祖先的土地，藐视我的人都看不到那片土地。这些人见过我的荣耀，见过我在埃及和旷野所行的神迹，却仍然不听我的话，试探我十次之多。

四十年之久惹上帝发怒的是谁呢？不就是那些犯罪作恶并倒毙在旷野的人吗？上帝起誓不准谁进入祂的安息呢？不就是那些不肯信从的人吗？可见，他们不能进入上帝的安息是因为不信的缘故。
