耶和华对约书亚说：“今天我除去了你们在埃及受的羞辱。”因此，那地方叫吉甲，沿用至今。

我的子民啊，你们要回想摩押王巴勒的阴谋以及比珥之子巴兰给他的回答，要回想你们从什亭到吉甲途中的遭遇，以便认识耶和华公义的作为。”

不要去伯特利求问，不要进入吉甲，也不要前往别示巴，因为吉甲人必被掳去，伯特利也必化为乌有。”

从亚割谷往北到底璧，到谷南亚都冥隘口对面的吉甲，经隐·示麦泉，直到隐·罗结；

基遍人派人去吉甲告诉约书亚说：“住在山区的亚摩利众王正联合起来攻打我们，求你赶快来救我们！不要不顾你的仆人。”

“从现在开始，你们要以这个月为一月，为一年之首。你要向以色列全体会众宣布，本月的第十日，每家都要预备一只羊羔，一家一只。

撒母耳对民众说：“来吧，我们到吉甲去，在那里重新立国。”于是，他们来到吉甲，在耶和华面前立扫罗为王，又向耶和华献上平安祭。扫罗和全体以色列人都非常欢喜。

“以色列人啊，你们去伯特利犯罪吧，去吉甲增添罪恶吧！要每天早晨献上祭物，每三天奉上你们的十分之一。

但撒母耳对他说：“你的刀怎样使妇人失去儿女，你的母亲也要怎样丧去她的儿子。”于是，撒母耳就在吉甲，在耶和华面前把亚甲杀死了。

之后，约书亚率领以色列人回到吉甲的营地。
