But they cried to the Lord for help, and he put darkness between you and the Egyptians; he brought the sea over them and covered them. You saw with your own eyes what I did to the Egyptians. Then you lived in the wilderness for a long time.

在埃及營和以色列營中間。一邊是雲是黑暗：一邊照亮着黑夜；終夜彼此不能相近。

法老越走越近的時候，以色列人一舉目，看見埃及人前進着趕來，就極其懼怕；向永恆主哀叫，

摩西就向海伸手；天快亮時候，海水回到原流的分量；埃及人逆流逃跑，永恆主把埃及人都抖在海中。水一回流，淹沒了車輛和馬兵、以及法老的全軍，那些跟着以色列人下海裏去的，連一個也沒有剩下。

摩西把以色列眾人召了來，對他們說：『永恆主在埃及地當你們眼前向法老和他的眾臣僕跟他的全國所行的一切事、你們都看見了，

以色列人在曠野走了四十年，等到全國的人、出埃及的戰士、都滅盡了，因為他們沒有聽永恆主的聲音；永恆主曾向他們起誓、不容他們看到永恆主向他們列祖起誓應許給我們的地、流奶與蜜之地。

有哪一位神曾試圖用試驗、用神迹、奇事、用戰爭、用大力的手、和伸出的膀臂、及大而驚人的事，去從別的國中將一國的人民領出來、歸於自己，像永恆主你們的上帝在埃及當你們眼前為你們所行的一切事呢？

你們的子孫必在曠野做遊牧四十年、擔當你們變節的罪罰，直到你們的屍身在曠野都滅盡了。按你們窺探那地的日數四十天、一天頂一年，你們必擔當你們的罪罰四十年，你們就知道我跟你們作對是甚麼樣子。」

以色列人看見永恆主向埃及人所顯大能的手，其眾民就敬畏永恆主，信服永恆主和他的僕人摩西。

這人民以色列的上帝揀選了我們的祖宗，當人民僑居在埃及的時候、抬舉他們，用伸高的膀臂領他們從那裏出來。在野地裏背負他們的無狀，約有四十年的工夫。

於是你們在加低斯住了所住下的那麼多日子。

那時你們的祖宗試我，探我，雖曾看我的作為。四十年之久我討厭那世代，說：『這是心裏迷糊的人民，不曉得我所行的；』

日間你又用雲柱領導他們，夜間又用火柱照亮他們所該走的路。你也降臨在西乃山，從天上同他們說話，賜給他們正當事的典章、真正的禮節規矩、美好之條例和誡命；你又使他們知道你的聖安息日，並由你僕人摩西經手、將誡命條例律法吩咐他們遵守。你從天上將糧食賜給他們、去給他們充饑，又使水從磐石間流出來、給他們解渴；你又吩咐他們要進來取得這地、就是你曾舉手起誓給他們的。『但是他們、我們的祖宗、狂妄傲慢，硬着脖子，不聽你的誡命，不肯聽從，也不記掛你在他們中間所行的奇妙作為，竟硬着脖子，立了首領，要返回他們在埃及為奴的地步。但你是樂意赦免人、的上帝：你有恩惠有憐憫，不輕易發怒，而有豐盛的堅愛：你不撇棄他們。他們雖造了一座牛犢鑄像，說：「這是你的上帝、曾領你從埃及上來的」，因而大大犯了褻慢你的罪，你還是大施憐憫，不把他們撇棄在曠野：日間雲柱還不離開他們，仍在路上領導他們；夜間火柱也不離開他們，仍然照亮他們所該走的路。你也賜下你至善的靈來訓誨他們，並不留住你的嗎哪、而使他們的口沒的喫，你又賜水給他們解渴。他們在曠野四十年你供養了他們，他們都沒有缺乏：他們的衣裳沒有破舊，他們的腳也沒有起泡。

上帝四十年厭惡誰呢？豈不是那些犯了罪、屍首倒在曠野的人麼？
