雲柱停在埃及軍隊和以色列人的中間，埃及軍隊這邊一片黑暗，以色列人那邊卻有光，雙方整夜都無法接近對方。

以色列人看見法老大軍追了上來，非常害怕，便呼求耶和華。

天剛亮的時候，摩西向海伸出手，海水便復原。埃及人紛紛向岸上逃命，耶和華卻使大水把他們捲回海中。海水回流，法老的戰車和人馬都淹沒在大海之中，全軍覆沒。

摩西召來所有以色列人，對他們說：「你們曾親眼見過耶和華在埃及怎樣對付法老及其臣僕和國民，

以色列人在曠野飄泊了四十年，直到從埃及出來可以作戰的男子都死了為止，因為他們不聽從耶和華的話。耶和華向他們起誓，不讓他們看見那奶蜜之鄉，衪曾應許他們祖先要把那個地方賜給他們。

有哪個神明像你們的上帝耶和華那樣在埃及當著你們的面降災禍、行神蹟奇事、興起戰爭、伸出臂膀、施展大能的手、以偉大而可畏的作為拯救一族脫離異邦？

你們的兒女要在曠野飄泊四十年，為你們的不忠而受苦，直到你們都死在曠野。你們打探了那地方四十天，你們要為自己的罪受苦四十年，一年頂一天。那時，你們就知道與我為敵的後果。』

以色列百姓親眼看見耶和華怎樣以大能對付埃及人，他們就敬畏耶和華，又信服祂和祂的僕人摩西。

以色列的上帝揀選了我們的祖先，讓他們在埃及寄居期間人丁興旺成為大族，後來祂伸出臂膀帶領他們離開埃及。他們在曠野漂泊的那四十年間，上帝一直照顧、容忍他們。

因此，你們在加低斯住了很久。

耶和華說：「雖然他們見過我的作為，卻仍然試探我。所以，我憎惡他們四十年之久，我說，『他們偏離正路，不遵行我的命令。』

白天，你用雲柱帶領他們；夜間，你用火柱照亮他們當走的路。你降臨在西奈山，從天上與他們說話，賜給他們公正的典章、信實的律法、美好的律例和誡命。你使他們知道你的神聖安息日，藉你僕人摩西賜給他們誡命、律例和法度。他們餓了，你賜下天糧給他們吃；他們渴了，你使磐石流出水給他們喝。你吩咐他們去佔領你起誓賜給他們的土地。但我們的祖先行事狂傲，頑固不化，不肯聽從你的誡命。他們拒絕聽從，忘記了你為他們所行的奇事，頑固不化，自立首領要回埃及做奴隸。但你是樂意饒恕，有恩典，有憐憫，不輕易發怒，充滿慈愛的上帝，你沒有離棄他們。縱使他們為自己鑄造了一頭牛犢，聲稱那是把他們帶出埃及的上帝，大大褻瀆了你，你還是對他們大施憐憫，沒有在曠野離棄他們。白天，雲柱沒有離開他們，仍然引導他們前行；夜間，火柱仍然照亮他們當走的路。你差遣你良善的靈去教導他們，沒有停止賜他們嗎哪吃，也沒有停止賜他們水喝。在曠野的四十年間，你供養他們，使他們一無所缺，他們的衣服沒有穿破，腳也沒有走腫。

四十年之久惹上帝發怒的是誰呢？不就是那些犯罪作惡並倒斃在曠野的人嗎？
