云柱停在埃及军队和以色列人的中间，埃及军队这边一片黑暗，以色列人那边却有光，双方整夜都无法接近对方。

以色列人看见法老大军追了上来，非常害怕，便呼求耶和华。

天刚亮的时候，摩西向海伸出手，海水便复原。埃及人纷纷向岸上逃命，耶和华却使大水把他们卷回海中。海水回流，法老的战车和人马都淹没在大海之中，全军覆没。

摩西召来所有以色列人，对他们说：“你们曾亲眼见过耶和华在埃及怎样对付法老及其臣仆和国民，

以色列人在旷野飘泊了四十年，直到从埃及出来可以作战的男子都死了为止，因为他们不听从耶和华的话。耶和华向他们起誓，不让他们看见那奶蜜之乡，衪曾应许他们祖先要把那个地方赐给他们。

有哪个神明像你们的上帝耶和华那样在埃及当着你们的面降灾祸、行神迹奇事、兴起战争、伸出臂膀、施展大能的手、以伟大而可畏的作为拯救一族脱离异邦？

你们的儿女要在旷野飘泊四十年，为你们的不忠而受苦，直到你们都死在旷野。你们打探了那地方四十天，你们要为自己的罪受苦四十年，一年顶一天。那时，你们就知道与我为敌的后果。’

以色列百姓亲眼看见耶和华怎样以大能对付埃及人，他们就敬畏耶和华，又信服祂和祂的仆人摩西。

以色列的上帝拣选了我们的祖先，让他们在埃及寄居期间人丁兴旺成为大族，后来祂伸出臂膀带领他们离开埃及。他们在旷野漂泊的那四十年间，上帝一直照顾、容忍他们。

因此，你们在加低斯住了很久。

耶和华说：“虽然他们见过我的作为，却仍然试探我。所以，我憎恶他们四十年之久，我说，‘他们偏离正路，不遵行我的命令。’

白天，你用云柱带领他们；夜间，你用火柱照亮他们当走的路。你降临在西奈山，从天上与他们说话，赐给他们公正的典章、信实的律法、美好的律例和诫命。你使他们知道你的神圣安息日，借你仆人摩西赐给他们诫命、律例和法度。他们饿了，你赐下天粮给他们吃；他们渴了，你使磐石流出水给他们喝。你吩咐他们去占领你起誓赐给他们的土地。但我们的祖先行事狂傲，顽固不化，不肯听从你的诫命。他们拒绝听从，忘记了你为他们所行的奇事，顽固不化，自立首领要回埃及做奴隶。但你是乐意饶恕，有恩典，有怜悯，不轻易发怒，充满慈爱的上帝，你没有离弃他们。纵使他们为自己铸造了一头牛犊，声称那是把他们带出埃及的上帝，大大亵渎了你，你还是对他们大施怜悯，没有在旷野离弃他们。白天，云柱没有离开他们，仍然引导他们前行；夜间，火柱仍然照亮他们当走的路。你差遣你良善的灵去教导他们，没有停止赐他们吗哪吃，也没有停止赐他们水喝。在旷野的四十年间，你供养他们，使他们一无所缺，他们的衣服没有穿破，脚也没有走肿。

四十年之久惹上帝发怒的是谁呢？不就是那些犯罪作恶并倒毙在旷野的人吗？
