But I took your father Abraham from the land beyond the Euphrates and led him throughout Canaan and gave him many descendants. I gave him Isaac,

耶和華對亞伯蘭說：「你要離開本地、本族、父家，往我所要指示你的地去。我必使你成為大國，我必賜福給你，使你的名為大；你要使別人得福。為你祝福的，我必賜福給他；詛咒你的，我必詛咒他。地上的萬族都必因你得福。」亞伯蘭就遵照耶和華的吩咐去了；羅得也和他同去。亞伯蘭離開哈蘭的時候年七十五歲。

司提反說：「諸位父老弟兄請聽！從前我們的祖宗亞伯拉罕在美索不達米亞，還沒有住在哈蘭的時候，榮耀的神向他顯現，對他說：『你要離開本地和親族，往我所要指示你的地去。』

亞伯拉罕年老，到神對他說的那所定的時候，撒拉懷了孕，給他生了一個兒子。亞伯拉罕給撒拉所生的兒子起名叫以撒。

看哪，兒女是耶和華所賜的產業，所懷的胎是他所給的賞賜。

你是耶和華神，曾揀選亞伯蘭，領他出迦勒底的吾珥，給他改名叫亞伯拉罕。你發現他在你面前心裏忠誠，就與他立約，要把迦南人、赫人、亞摩利人、比利洗人、耶布斯人、革迦撒人之地賜給他的後裔，並且你也實現了你的話，因為你是公義的。

於是耶和華帶他到外面，說：「你向天觀看，去數星星，你能數得清嗎？」又對他說：「你的後裔將要如此。」
