利百加的奶妈底波拉死了，葬在伯特利下边的橡树下；那棵树名叫亚伦‧巴古。

雅各清早起来，拿起枕在头下的石头，立作柱子，浇油在上面。他给那地方起名叫伯特利；那地方原先名叫路斯。雅各许愿说：“上帝若与我同在，在我所行的路上保佑我，给我食物吃，衣服穿，使我平平安安回到我父亲的家，我就必以耶和华为我的上帝。我所立为柱子的这块石头必作上帝的殿；凡你所赐给我的，我必将十分之一献给你。”

当摩西把这律法的话写完在书上，到完成的时候，摩西吩咐抬耶和华约柜的利未人说：“把这律法书拿来，放在耶和华—你们上帝的约柜旁，可以在那里作指责你们的见证。

吩咐他们说：‘你们从这里，从约旦河中祭司的脚稳稳站立的地方，取十二块石头，一起带过去，放在你们今夜住宿的地方。’”于是约书亚召集了他从以色列人中所选的十二个人，每支派一人。约书亚对他们说：“你们要过去，到约旦河中，耶和华—你们上帝的约柜前面，按以色列人支派的数目，每人各取一块石头扛在肩上。这些石头在你们中间将成为记号。日后，你们的子孙问你们说：‘这些石头对你们有什么意思呢？’你们就对他们说：‘这是因为约旦河的水在耶和华的约柜前中断；约柜过约旦河的时候，约旦河的水就中断了。这些石头要作以色列人永远的纪念。’”以色列人就照约书亚所吩咐的做了。他们按以色列人支派的数目，从约旦河中取了十二块石头，正如耶和华所吩咐约书亚的。他们把石头带过去，到他们所住宿的地方，就放在那里。约书亚另外把十二块石头立在约旦河的中间，在抬约柜祭司的脚站立的地方；直到今日，石头还在那里。
