你們今日卻厭棄了救你們脫離一切災難的神，說：『求你立一個王治理我們。』現在你們應當按着支派、宗族都站在耶和華面前。」

羅波安往示劍去；因為以色列人都到了示劍要立他作王。

所以我立時打發人去請你。你來了很好；現今我們都在神面前，要聽主所吩咐你的一切話。」

亞伯蘭經過那地，到了示劍地方、摩利橡樹那裏。那時迦南人住在那地。

摩西從以色列人中揀選了有才能的人，立他們為百姓的首領，作千夫長、百夫長、五十夫長、十夫長。他們隨時審判百姓，有難斷的案件就呈到摩西那裏，但各樣小事他們自己審判。

耶路‧巴力的兒子亞比米勒到了示劍見他的眾母舅，對他們和他外祖全家的人說：「請你們問示劍的眾人說，是耶路‧巴力的眾子七十人都管理你們好呢？還是一人管理你們好呢？你們又要記念我是你們的骨肉。」他的眾母舅便將這一切話為他說給示劍人聽，示劍人的心就歸向亞比米勒。他們說：「他原是我們的弟兄」；

雅各從巴旦‧亞蘭回來的時候，平平安安地到了迦南地的示劍城，在城東支搭帳棚，就用一百塊銀子向示劍的父親、哈抹的子孫買了支帳棚的那塊地，

他們就把外邦人的神像和他們耳朵上的環子交給雅各；雅各都藏在示劍那裏的橡樹底下。
