我们行这事并非无故，是特意做的，说：恐怕日后你们的子孙对我们的子孙说：‘你们与耶和华以色列的神有何关涉呢？

不是这样！我们做这事的原因是惧怕将来你们的子孙对我们的子孙说：‘你们与耶和华—以色列的上帝有什么关系呢？

我们这样做是怕以后你们的子孙可能会对我们的子孙说，‘你们和以色列的上帝耶和华有什么关系？

我们作这事，实在是有理由的，因为顾虑将来你们的子孙对我们的子孙说：‘你们与耶和华以色列的神有什么关系呢？

不是的，我們這樣行、是有所掛慮、恐怕日後你們的子孫會對我們的子孫說：「你們和永恆主以色列的上帝有甚麼關係呢？

我儕行此、乃由預防之故、有意而為、言恐日後爾裔謂我裔曰、爾與以色列之上帝耶和華何與、

我之築壇非無故也、恐爾後嗣謂我後嗣云、爾曹與以色列族之上帝何與。

我之建祭臺、非無故也、恐日後爾子孫謂我子孫曰、爾曹與主以色列之天主何與、

“ No! We did it for fear that some day your descendants might say to ours,‘ What do you have to do with the Lord, the God of Israel?

“ No! We built it because we were afraid. Someday your children might speak to our children. We were afraid they might say,‘ What do you have to do with the Lord? What do you have to do with the God of Israel?

No, but we did it from fear that in time to come your children might say to our children,‘ What have you to do with the Lord, the God of Israel?

“ The truth is, we have built this altar because we fear that in the future your descendants will say to ours,‘ What right do you have to worship the Lord, the God of Israel?

But truly we have done this out of concern, for a reason, saying,‘ In time to come your sons may say to our sons,“ What have you to do with the Lord, the God of Israel?

But in fact we have done it for fear, for a reason, saying,‘ In time to come your descendants may speak to our descendants, saying,“ What have you to do with the Lord God of Israel?

and if we have not rather out of carefulness done this, and of purpose, saying, In time to come your children might speak unto our children, saying, What have ye to do with Jehovah, the God of Israel?

“ If we have not out of concern done this, and for a reason, saying,‘ In time to come your children might speak to our children, saying,“ What have you to do with Yahweh, the God of Israel?

so that this will be a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you,‘ What do these stones mean to you?’

In the future when you come to check on my wages, my honesty will testify for me. If I have any female goats that are not speckled or spotted, or any lambs that are not black, they will be considered stolen.”

“ When your son asks you in the future,‘ What is the meaning of the decrees, statutes, and ordinances that the LORD our God has commanded you?’

For I have chosen him so that he will command his children and his house after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just. This is how the LORD will fulfill to Abraham what he promised him.”
