約書亞對呂便人、迦得人和瑪拿西半支派的人說：「你們要記得耶和華的僕人摩西所吩咐你們的話說：『耶和華－你們的上帝使你們得享安寧，必將這地賜給你們。』你們的妻子、孩子和牲畜可以留在約旦河東、摩西所給你們的地。但你們中間所有大能的勇士都要帶着兵器，在你們的弟兄前面過去，你們要幫助他們。等到耶和華使你們的弟兄和你們一樣得享平靜，並且得着耶和華－你們上帝所賜他們為業之地的時候，你們才可以回到你們所得之地，承受為業，就是耶和華的僕人摩西在約旦河東、向日出的方向所給你們的地。」他們回答約書亞說：「凡你吩咐我們的，我們都必做；凡你差我們去的地方，我們都必去。我們在一切事上怎樣聽從摩西，也必照樣聽從你。惟願耶和華－你的上帝與你同在，像與摩西同在一樣。無論甚麼人違背你的命令，不聽從你所吩咐他的一切話，就必處死。你只要剛強壯膽！」

我給了呂便人和迦得人從基列到亞嫩谷，以谷的中央為界，直到亞捫人邊界的雅博河；還有亞拉巴和靠近約旦河之地，從基尼烈直到亞拉巴海，就是鹽海，以及毗斯迦山斜坡的山腳東邊之地。「那時，我吩咐你們說：『耶和華－你們的上帝已將這地賜給你們為業；你們所有的勇士都要帶着兵器，在你們的弟兄以色列人前面過去。但你們的妻子、孩子、牲畜，可以住在我所賜給你們的各城裏，我知道你們有許多牲畜。等到耶和華讓你們的弟兄像你們一樣，得享太平，他們在約旦河另一邊，也得了耶和華－你們的上帝所賜給他們的地，你們各人才可以回到我所賜給你們為業之地。』

摩西對他們說：「你們若要這麼做，若要在耶和華面前帶着兵器出去打仗，你們中間所有帶兵器的人都要在耶和華面前過約旦河，直到耶和華把仇敵從他面前趕出去。那地在耶和華面前被征服以後，你們方可回來。這樣，你們向耶和華和以色列才算為無罪，這地也必在耶和華面前歸你們為業。倘若你們不這樣做，看哪，你們就得罪了耶和華，當知道你們的罪必找上你們。如今你們可以為孩童建城，為羊羣築圈，但你們口所講出來的話，必須實踐。」迦得子孫和呂便子孫對摩西說：「你的僕人們必照我主所吩咐的去做。我們的孩子、妻子、牛羊和所有的牲畜都要留在基列的各城。但你的僕人，凡能帶兵器上戰場的，都要照我主所說的話，在耶和華面前渡過去打仗。」於是，摩西為他們吩咐以利亞撒祭司和嫩的兒子約書亞，以及以色列人各支派父系的領袖。摩西對他們說：「迦得子孫和呂便子孫，凡帶兵器在耶和華面前去打仗的，若與你們一同渡過約旦河，那地被你們征服以後，你們就要把基列地給他們為業。
