And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God, and took a great stone, and set it up there under an oak, that[ was] by the sanctuary of the LORD.And Joshua said unto all the people, Behold, this stone shall be a witness unto us; for it hath heard all the words of the LORD which he spake unto us: it shall be therefore a witness unto you, lest ye deny your God.

For the LORD hath made Jordan a border between us and you, ye children of Reuben and children of Gad; ye have no part in the LORD: so shall your children make our children cease from fearing the LORD.Therefore we said, Let us now prepare to build us an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice:But[ that] it[ may be] a witness between us, and you, and our generations after us, that we might do the service of the LORD before him with our burnt offerings, and with our sacrifices, and with our peace offerings; that your children may not say to our children in time to come, Ye have no part in the LORD.Therefore said we, that it shall be, when they should[ so] say to us or to our generations in time to come, that we may say[ again], Behold the pattern of the altar of the LORD, which our fathers made, not for burnt offerings, nor for sacrifices; but it[ is] a witness between us and you.

And Jacob said unto his brethren, Gather stones; and they took stones, and made an heap: and they did eat there upon the heap.And Laban called it Jegarsahadutha: but Jacob called it Galeed.And Laban said, This heap[ is] a witness between me and thee this day. Therefore was the name of it called Galeed;And Mizpah; for he said, The LORD watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another.If thou shalt afflict my daughters, or if thou shalt take[ other] wives beside my daughters, no man[ is] with us; see, God[ is] witness betwixt me and thee.And Laban said to Jacob, Behold this heap, and behold[ this] pillar, which I have cast betwixt me and thee;This heap[ be] witness, and[ this] pillar[ be] witness, that I will not pass over this heap to thee, and that thou shalt not pass over this heap and this pillar unto me, for harm.

And Joshua said unto them, Pass over before the ark of the LORD your God into the midst of Jordan, and take ye up every man of you a stone upon his shoulder, according unto the number of the tribes of the children of Israel:That this may be a sign among you,[ that] when your children ask[ their fathers] in time to come, saying, What[ mean] ye by these stones?Then ye shall answer them, That the waters of Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD; when it passed over Jordan, the waters of Jordan were cut off: and these stones shall be for a memorial unto the children of Israel for ever.And the children of Israel did so as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the midst of Jordan, as the LORD spake unto Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, and carried them over with them unto the place where they lodged, and laid them down there.And Joshua set up twelve stones in the midst of Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests which bare the ark of the covenant stood: and they are there unto this day.
