When they came to Geliloth near the Jordan in the land of Canaan, the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh built an imposing altar there by the Jordan.

The tribes of Reuben and Gad and half of the tribe of Manasseh came to Geliloth. It was near the Jordan River in the land of Canaan. They built a large altar there by the Jordan.

And when they came to the region of the Jordan that is in the land of Canaan, the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh built there an altar by the Jordan, an altar of imposing size.

But while they were still in Canaan, and when they came to a place called Geliloth near the Jordan River, the men of Reuben, Gad, and the half tribe of Manasseh stopped to build a large and imposing altar.

流本人和迦得人啊，耶和华定了约旦河作我们和你们中间的疆界；你们与耶和华无分了。’这样，你们的子孙就使我们的子孙不再敬畏耶和华了。“因此我们说：‘我们筑一座坛吧，不是为了献燔祭，也不是为了献别的祭，而是为了在你们和我们中间，也在我们的后代中间作证据，使我们也可以在耶和华面前用燔祭、别的祭和平安祭事奉耶和华，免得你们的子孙将来对我们的子孙说：你们与耶和华无分了。’因此我们说：‘将来有人对我们，或是对我们的后代这样说，我们就可以回答：你们看我们列祖所筑的坛，是耶和华的祭坛的模式，这并不是用来献燔祭，也不是用来献别的祭，而是在我们和你们中间作证据。’

雅各又对自己的众兄弟说：“你们把石头堆聚起来。”他们就把石头拿来，堆成了一堆。他们又在石堆旁边吃喝。拉班称那石堆为伊迦尔．撒哈杜他，雅各却称那石堆为迦累得。拉班说：“今天这堆石头是你我之间的证据。”因此它名叫迦累得，又名叫米斯巴，因为拉班说：“我们彼此分离以后，愿耶和华在你我中间鉴察。你若苦待我的女儿，或在我的女儿以外，另娶妻子，虽然没有人在我们中间作证，但你要注意，神就是你我之间的见证人。”拉班又对雅各说：“你看这堆石头，看我在你我之间所竖立的石柱。这堆石头就是证据，这石柱也是证据：我决不越过这石堆到你那里去，你也决不可越过这石堆和石柱，到我这里来害我。

约书亚对他们说：“你们走到约旦河中间，在耶和华你们的神的约柜前面，按着以色列十二支派的数目，每人拿起一块石头，扛在自己的肩上；这可以在你们中间作记号；如果日后你们的子孙问你们，说：‘这些石头对你们有什么意思？’你们就可以告诉他们：‘这是因为约旦河的水在耶和华的约柜前被截断了；约柜过约旦河的时候，约旦河的水被截断了。所以这些石头要给以色列人作记念，直到永远。’”以色列人就照着约书亚吩咐的行了；他们照着耶和华吩咐约书亚的，按着以色列十二支派的数目，从约旦河中间取了十二块石头，把它们带过去，到他们住宿的地方，就放在那里。约书亚又在约旦河中间，在抬约柜的祭司的脚所站的地方，竖立十二块石头；那些石头到今日还在那里。
