When they came to Geliloth near the Jordan in the land of Canaan, the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh built an imposing altar there by the Jordan.

The tribes of Reuben and Gad and half of the tribe of Manasseh came to Geliloth. It was near the Jordan River in the land of Canaan. They built a large altar there by the Jordan.

And when they came to the region of the Jordan that is in the land of Canaan, the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh built there an altar by the Jordan, an altar of imposing size.

But while they were still in Canaan, and when they came to a place called Geliloth near the Jordan River, the men of Reuben, Gad, and the half tribe of Manasseh stopped to build a large and imposing altar.

耶和华把约旦河定为我们跟你们吕便和迦得人的边界，你们与耶和华一点关系也没有。’这样，恐怕你们的子孙会使我们的子孙不再敬畏耶和华。因此，我们便商议在这里筑一座祭坛，这坛不是用来献燔祭或别的祭，只是在你们和我们之间，也在彼此的后人之间立个证据，证明我们也献燔祭、平安祭及其他祭事奉耶和华，免得日后你们的子孙对我们的子孙说，‘你们与耶和华一点关系也没有。’万一你们对我们或我们的子孙这样说，我们可以回答说，‘你们看我们祖先筑的这座祭坛跟耶和华的祭坛一模一样，只是这座坛不是用来献燔祭或别的祭，而是作为你们和我们之间的证据！’

又吩咐族人去收集石头。他们把石头堆成一堆，在旁边吃喝。拉班称那石堆为伊迦尔·撒哈杜他，雅各却称那石堆为迦累得。拉班说：“今日，这石堆是你我之间的凭证。”因此，那地方名叫迦累得，又叫米斯巴，因为拉班说：“我们分手以后，愿上帝亲自鉴察我们。倘若你虐待我的女儿，或在她们以外另娶妻子，即使没人知道，也有上帝在你我之间做见证。”拉班又说：“看我在你我之间立的这石堆和石柱。这石堆和石柱都是凭证，我一定不会越过石堆去害你，你也不可越过石堆和石柱来害我。

“你们到约旦河床你们的上帝耶和华的约柜前面，每人扛一块石头回来，每个支派一块，一共十二块。这些石头要在你们中间作记号。以后，倘若你们的子孙问你们，‘这些石头是什么意思？’你们就告诉他们，‘约旦河水在耶和华的约柜前曾经被截断，当约柜过河的时候，河水被截断了。这些石头要在以色列人当中作为永久的纪念。’”以色列人就照约书亚的吩咐，也就是照耶和华对约书亚的吩咐，按以色列人支派的数目，从约旦河中取了十二块石头，搬来放在住宿的地方。约书亚又在约旦河床抬约柜的祭司站立的地方立了十二块石头。石头至今还在那里。
