The spies had said to her,“ You made us give our word. But we won’t keep our promise

他们二人对她说：“如果你不遵照我们的话行，你叫我们起的誓就与我们无关了。

二人對她說：「要讓我們信守誓言，你必須這樣做，

他們二人對她說：“如果你不遵照我們的話行，你叫我們起的誓就與我們無關了。

二人就對她說：『以下這幾件事你總要行，不然、你叫我們起的誓就與我們無干了。

二人曰、爾使我所發之誓、我必守之而無咎、

二人曰、爾既用絳索以縋我、必以此索、仍繫於牖、集爾父母兄弟戚屬、至於斯室、厥後我儕至斯土、則爾使我所發之誓、我必恪守。

二人對曰、爾使我所發之誓、我必守之而不失信、

Now the men had said to her,“ This oath you made us swear will not be binding on us

The men said to her,“ We will be guiltless with respect to this oath of yours that you have made us swear.

Before they left, the men told her,“ We will be bound by the oath we have taken only if you follow these instructions.

The men said to her,“ We will be free from this oath you made us swear,

And the men said to her,“ We shall be exempt from this oath to you which you have made us swear,

So the men said to her:“ We will be blameless of this oath of yours which you have made us swear,

And the men said unto her, We will be guiltless of this thine oath which thou hast made us to swear.

The men said to her,“ We will be free from this oath you made us swear,

And the men said unto her, We[ will be] blameless of this thine oath which thou hast made us swear.

The men said to her,“ We are not bound by this oath you made us swear unless the following conditions are met:

The men said to her,“ We will be guiltless of this your oath which you’ve made us to swear.

“‘ Do not steal.“‘ Do not tell lies.“‘ Do not cheat one another.“‘ Do not give your word in my name and then be a false witness. That would be treating the name of your God as if it were not holy. I am the Lord.

Suppose a man makes a special promise to the Lord. Or suppose he gives his word to do something. Then he must keep his promise. He must do everything he said he would do.

The king spared Mephibosheth. He was the son of Jonathan and the grandson of Saul. David had made a promise in front of the Lord. He had promised to be kind to Jonathan and the family line of his father Saul.

For three years in a row there wasn’t enough food in the land. That was while David was king. So David asked the Lord why he wasn’t blessing his people. The Lord said,“ It is because Saul and his family committed murder. He put the people of Gibeon to death.”The people of Gibeon weren’t a part of Israel. Instead, they were some of the Amorites who were still left alive. The Israelites had promised to spare them. But Saul had tried to put an end to them. That’s because he wanted to make Israel and Judah strong. So now King David sent for the people of Gibeon and spoke to them.

Don’t tell anyone what we’re doing. If you do, we won’t have to keep the promise you asked us to make.”

“ Do not misuse the name of the Lord your God. The Lord will find guilty anyone who misuses his name.

The Lord is the God of heaven and the God of earth. I want you to make a promise to me in his name. I’m living among the people of Canaan. But I want you to promise me that you won’t get a wife for my son from their daughters.Instead, promise me that you will go to my country and to my own relatives. Get a wife for my son Isaac from there.”The servant asked Abraham,“ What if the woman doesn’t want to come back with me to this land? Then should I take your son back to the country you came from?”“ Make sure you don’t take my son back there,” Abraham said.“ The Lord, the God of heaven, took me away from my father’s family. He brought me out of my own land. He made me a promise. He said,‘ I will give this land to your family after you.’ The Lord will send his angel ahead of you. So you will be able to get a wife for my son from there.The woman may not want to come back with you. If she doesn’t, you will be free from your promise. But don’t take my son back there.”
