嫩的兒子約書亞暗中從什亭派出兩個探子去偵察對岸，特別是耶利哥的情況。他們來到一個名叫喇合的妓女家中，就住在那裡。

撒瑪利亞的居民要因伯·亞文的牛犢偶像而恐懼顫抖；祭拜它的人要哀傷，供奉它的祭司要痛哭，因為它的榮耀將離開他們。

耶利哥人害怕以色列人，就把所有的城門都關得緊緊的，無人出入。
